This is easily one of my favorite projects I’ve ever been a part of. Last October we shot this commercial for Native & The Olympics with the USA Bobsled team!

Part of that is personal, getting to spend a few days in Lake Placid / Saranac, a place where I’ve spent so much time over the years. A place that will always feel like home to me.

Part of it is creative. Collaborating with the incredible team at @raindropagency. Thoughtful, sharp, and just genuinely great people doing great work. They trusted us to help their vision come to life and it was an amazing experience. They are the best.

And a huge part of it is the team. We brought our core NYC/NJ crew upstate and they absolutely crushed it. Long days, big swings, no ego…just execution.

So proud. So grateful. taken in Lake Placid Olympic Bobsled Run by @ferrumfilms

This is what access looks like.

Last month we opened the doors for the first Grip Sessions. A room full of young filmmakers getting their hands on real gear, a lot of them for the first time.

C-stands. Grid rigging. The stuff that usually takes years on set to learn.

We put real equipment in their hands and real pros next to them. That’s the whole idea. Get people in early. Teach them right. Send them back out better.
Roll the night back with us. 🎬

Thank you to our instructors, to Vexio Studios, to Matthews, and to the New Jersey Film Commission for standing behind it.

First of many.

Grip Sessions. Night one in the books. 🎬

The studio filled up with young filmmakers. Some of them put their hands on real gear for the first time. C-stands. Grid rigging. The stuff that usually takes years on set to pick up.

That’s the whole point. Get people access early. Put real equipment in their hands. Let them learn from people who’ve been doing this for decades.

We got into this to tell great stories. Nights like this might matter just as much.

Thank you to our instructors, @jchua_ch , @harryfontan , @pablorobertoarias , and @normanrubinsky . You showed up and gave these filmmakers something real.

Thank you @vexio_studios for the room, and @matthewsgrip for the gear.

A special thank you to @jerzeymovieman from the New Jersey Film Commission for coming out and supporting this. Having the state behind what we’re building means a lot.

This was the first. It won’t be the last.

Tag someone who belongs in the next one. 👇

Great productions require working with great people. This was very much the case on this one. Excited to share what we’ve been working on, and big thanks to the folks that make this machine run!

NJ film crews — this one’s for you.

Grip Sessions is a hands-on grip workshop built around Matthews gear, at Vexio Studios in Fairfield, NJ with Ferrum Films. One night, real equipment, and instructors who’ve spent decades on set. No slideshows — you’re on the gear the whole time.

Two courses to pick from:

Grip 101 — Basics & a Little Extra
The fundamentals, plus the tips and tricks every seasoned G&E swears by. Set a C-stand like a vet, work faster and safer, and protect your gear and your head. Never touched a C-stand or just want to sharpen up — either way, you’re covered.

Grid Rigging
Rigging gear up on the grid, and everything that comes with working over people. Real techniques, real-world know-how, and a heavy focus on safety, because it’s all hanging over everybody’s heads.

You’ve used Matthews gear on set. This is your chance to really learn it, straight from the people who know it best.

📍 Vexio Studios · Fairfield, NJ
🗓 Thursday, September 24 · 6:30–9 PM
🎟 Limited to 100 spots — they’ll go fast

👉 Link in bio to grab your spot.

Just starting out and want to learn the right way? This one’s built for you. Tag a friend who’s coming up, or send it their way — better to learn it together than figure it out the hard way on set.

Hosted by @matthewsgrip + @vexio_studios + @ferrumfilms

Working with a Russian Arm changes the level of responsibility you carry as a Director of Photography.
When you move beyond Fischer dollies, gimbals, and smaller camera systems into equipment this substantial, preparation stops being optional. Stunt work requires every element to be laid out: previsualization, shot lists, track geography, crew positions, timing, light, and the limitations of the machine itself.
Good prep is not only what allows you to finish the day on schedule. It is part of what keeps people alive.
As a cinematographer, your job is not simply to make the film look good. You are also responsible for helping create a set where everyone can work safely. If you fail to do your due diligence around a moving camera car, stunt vehicles, or a loaded crane arm, the consequences can be catastrophic. I take that personally.
Hire professionals who understand the equipment, its danger zones, and the temperament required to operate under pressure. This is not a situation where you show up, improvise, and “go with the flow.”
Give the team a precise creative objective, then trust them to determine the safest way to execute it. The crane operator, camera operator, 1st AC, camera-car driver, stunt driver, and AD department all have information you do not.
Maintain overwatch. Know the track, crew positions, travel time between setups, available light, and how each shot affects the rest of the day.
A Russian Arm is heavy, offset, and dependent on communication between four or five people. Every move has physical limits, and every decision takes time to pass through the team.
You also need to know when not to use one. A drone may cover a simple follow. A MOVI Pro mounted to a standard vehicle may handle a linear move. The Russian Arm earns its cost when you need controlled high-to-low movement, lateral sweeps, or spherical movement around a vehicle.
With strong prep, a closed track, the right crew, overheads, and a specific shot list, a commercial team can often capture most of the required work in five or six hours.
The danger is rarely the size of the equipment. It is vagueness.

Last summer we got to work with the wildly talented folks @mocolab_ to create some of these fun vignettes for brands we had relationships with.

A cool test with our friend @viewsbyelose as the “talent” both the bts and the test clip for @jonesroadbeauty sun screen.

This team programmed the arm to track with the camera to get that seamless move up and then the wrap around! 😮

Shaping a high-end commercial without exploiting the viewer.

We live in a commercial world, and that is not automatically a problem. Businesses need to sell. Workers need to be paid. Products need to move. Good companies deserve to survive, and good work deserves to be seen.

The problem is not commerce. The problem is disordered commerce. A lot of advertising is built around pressing on the lower appetites: envy, insecurity, lust, status anxiety, comparison, fear of missing out. It does not ask, “How do we tell the truth about this product?” It asks, “What weakness can we exploit hard enough to make someone buy?”

The person watching the ad is not just a nervous system to stimulate, a desire to inflame, or a wallet to capture. The viewer is a human person. That means the work has to be built with more discipline than simply making something look expensive, seductive, or untouchable.

Lamborghini is an icon of speed, engineering, Italian craftsmanship, design, power, and status.

For this commercial, it’s about a son remembering his father. A legacy handed down. A race tied to memory, grief, inheritance, courage, and excellence. It was part of the story of a man receiving what had been entrusted to him.

The strongest values are not the ones that manipulate appetite. They are the ones that reach the heart: family, memory, honor, sacrifice, courage, love, excellence, and responsibility.

That shaped the cinematography, the story, the visuals, and the language of the piece. Sell the product. Tell the truth. Do not degrade the viewer. Do not make the thing more important than the person.
