FF Projects is pleased to announce Call and Response, a duo show by artists Remi Ajani and Hamed Maiye, and the sixth presentation within FF Projects’ year-long residency at Alára. The exhibition, which takes place during Lagos Art Week, will also be accompanied by a publication, conceived by the artists, which features an intergenerational roster of Nigerian cultural figures.

In the elliptical compositions of Remi Ajani and Hamed Maiye, both Nigerians raised outside of Nigeria, I recognise what Toni Morrison names rememory. Maiye’s figures, defined by the starkness of their bright-white outlines against oceans of Prussian blue, are always somehow compromised. They evade a fleshly, full-bodied existence; instead, the precarity of their chalk-drawn scores produces an intuitive space of association, given in vestiges and sketches that echo pictures captured in our minds but otherwise unexpressed. In the always-coming-undone strokes of Ajani’s paintings, Black physicalities are made visible. Folks gather, regard themselves, and linger in crowds held taut in the act of coming together and perhaps also slipping away. This seductive brush of the familiar at the edge of the unfamiliar is how Morrison writes rememory.

Yet The Great Life Continues is open now! until October 18th. i am sooo happy with this show, and to work again with @fade.0707 and @waru_guru , two artists i love so much and who build their worlds so purposefully and diligently. and getting to watch said worlds collide and coalesce has been kind of life-changing! i love the conversation they’re having in the exhibition, because life can be hard but it can also be beautiful and soft and filled with signs of good things to come! i love their rejection of any kind of hierarchy of material; they work with paper and fabric and will not apologise for it! it’s also really wonderful to see so many different ways of manipulating cloth: dye, paint, stitching, embroidering, beading, quilting. the responsibility and care to carry forward age-old techniques, often practiced by women and to keep these methods alive. i feel like encountering this show forces a slowing down. so many details and moments, you have to hang around to catch them all. please come and see it! 🦜
