With this year's Atlas Workshops coming to an end, let's have a look at 5 Atlas alumni you need to know before immersing yourself in Sofia's world 🪐🌒🐶

🛸 Animalia | out in UK cinemas on 12 Dec. 🛸

• @lina__su is a French-Palestinian-Algerian filmmaker and actress. She directed the documentaries Their Algeria (2020) and Bye Bye Tiberias (2023). She's back this year with a project in development - Hold Me (If You Want) - which is part of the official selection of the 8th edition of the Atlas Workshops.

• Moroccan film director, screenwriter, and producer @asmae_el_moudir developed her first feature The Mother of All Lies at the 2021 Atlas Workshops, before premiering in Cannes, where it won the Un Certain Regard Directing Prize. It was also the first Moroccan film to win the Étoile d’Or in Marrakech. Asmae is back at this year's Atlas with a new project in post production, Don't Let the Sun Go Up On Me, where she won for the second time the top Post Production Prize.

• @erigesehiri is a French-Tunisian director and producer. 🛸 Animalia Watchlist

5 supernatural MENA films to watch before discovering @sofia.alaouii's feature debut

1 🪐 BALLAD OF TARA (1979), dir. Bahram Beyzaie

Buried by the Iranian authorities for four decades before coming to the big screen in 2023, Ballad of Tara is a ghost/love story inspired by Iranian folklore. Tara, a young widow, meets a dead knight looking for his lost sword, in a blend of myth, symbolism, folklore, and classical Persian literature.

2 🪐 NATION ESTATE (2012), dir. Larissa Sansour

Nation Estate consists of a 9-minute sci-fi short film and a photo series by Palestinian multimedia artist Larissa Sansour, known for her experimental sci-fi shorts. In The Nation Estate, Palestine is depicted as a skyscraper, with each floor representing a city, offering a clinically dystopian, yet humorous approach to Palestinian statehood.

3 🪐 SUBMARINE (2016), dir. Mounia Akl

Inspired by the 2015 garbage crisis in Lebanon, Mounia Akl’s short Submarine tells the not-so-dystopian story of Hala, a young Lebanese woman who cannot bring herself to leave when she is forced to evacuate, clinging to whatever remains of home.

4 🪐 OUROBOROS (2017), dir. Basma Alsharif

Ouroboros is an experimental feature debut by Kuwaiti artist Basma Alsharif. In this surreal environment, Ouroboros depicts an endless cycle where the future is continually presented to us as a dystopian yet recognisable past, paying homage to the Gaza Strip and the possibility of hope beyond hopelessness.

5 🪐 THE DAM (2022), dir. Ali Cherri

Lebanese visual artist Ali Cherri’s feature debut is a Sudanese hallucinatory tale set against the backdrop of the country’s 2018 revolution, with references to the Islamic culture and Mary Shelley’s literature. Maher works in a traditional brickyard fed by the waters of the Nile. Every evening, he secretly wanders off into the desert to build a mysterious construction made of mud. While the Sudanese people rise to claim their freedom, his creation starts to take a life of its own…
