POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Part 1 of our @bbcradio1 morning interview at the FibreLab studio.

This morning we welcomed reporter Gem O’Reilly into our Fish Island studio to discuss the importance of textile recycling and how we’re working with industry to make a difference.

The feature is part of a week-long reporting special focusing on waste and recycling across the UK, reminding us of the real-world consequences of climate change and highlighting positive solutions leading that change.

We’re so excited to be launching the FibreLab X The Revival Collaboration this weekend at our Artisanal Wonders pop-up

The Revival is a community-led organisation, founded by Yayra Agbofah, creating awareness, art, and jobs with upcycled global textile waste that arrives in Ghana.

During FibreLab’s recent trip to Accra and following a visit to The Revival’s studio we instantly began exploring ways to collaborate, after being inspired by the incredible ingenuity and dedication to tackling textile waste.

This limited edition collection of upcycled kimonos was collaboratively designed and made from discarded second-hand clothes from Kantamanto Market that have been diverted from landfill. These discarded textiles have been reimagined by The Revival’s tailors through patchwork to retain their value and bring new life to used clothing.

Made in The Revival’s studio in Kantamanto Market, each kimono is one-of-a-kind and carries a story of innovation and circularity.

Join us at our Artisanal Wonders pop-up this weekend to be the first to shop The Revival X FibreLab collection. We can’t wait for you to see it.

Have you got fabric scraps or other damaged/unusable textiles you don’t know what to do with? We’re SO excited to be launching our first ever customer textile recycling project today with @fibrelab ✨

Sign up to send us your textile waste and Fibre Lab (who are close to us in Hackney) will recycle it into a zero waste 40 x 40cm cushion pad for you. They have machines that shred the fibres down to create a plush, soft filling then use damaged hotel sheets to make the outer cover. The finished cushions feel weighty and lux and are such a special item to own.

We’re currently taking bookings for the first recycling run of 50kg of waste. We have limited spots available for this first run and you do NOT need to have your scraps ready to sign up. We recommend signing up now to secure your place then just make sure you send us your scraps by the middle of November. Each person needs to send us 700g of fabric waste, and it can be made up of any fibres. We’ll send lots more details to everyone who signs up!

Find the link in our bio, we’re so excited to help you all recycle your textile waste ✨

Only open to the UK currently.

FibreLab teamed up with Charlie from @re_semblancestudio studio to bring our #SustainableYoungMakers an interactive workshop exploring circular fashion.

Charlie shared her experience with the group and introduced them to working with unconventional materials, using discarded bicycle inner tubes as the starting point for a new product.

For the workshop, our young makers transformed the inner tubes into portable sewing repair kits, complete with needles, thread and a seam ripper for mending on the go. It was everyone’s first time sewing with something other than fabric, challenging the group to adapt their cutting and construction skills to a completely different medium.

Working independently from Charlie’s pattern and tutorial also gave each maker space to experiment and develop their own individual design.

The session opened up new ideas for their own projects and showed how even unexpected waste materials can become useful, thoughtful products through design.

Thank you @re_semblancestudio for sharing your expertise and helping our makers see waste differently 🪡 taken in Fish Island Village by @fibrelab

The first task for our Sustainable Young Makers involved looking into examples of garments and materials to understand the recycling process.

Our Makers began this activity by exploring the different fabrics and garments which needed to be sorted by composition and analysed the different components in the materials, they then disassembled the materials to prepare it for shredding.

Finally, they experienced a demonstration of fabric scraps from @making.for.change being shredded and recycled into a new raw material, opening the possibilities of how waste can take on a new life.

Monday was an exciting start to our Sustainable Young Maker’s programme; we were joined by 6 new faces who were introduced to the studio and began their sustainability journey.

They sat together and introduced themselves, sharing their experience and current paths. They set specific, individual goals across the upcoming 3 months and 12 months to achieve through the programme, this was discussed as a group to identify areas they could collaborate with, helping each other.

Together they explored a variety of materials, getting all hands-on disassembling and grouping them, ready to be shredded. After a live demo of how the shredding process works, we opened the question of the possibilities of how these materials could be recycled in different ways, our young attendees shared their brilliant ideas!

A huge thank you to the @thetrampery and @wickdt for their ongoing support and for making this programme possible.
