Book Review 🍵📖

I really enjoyed the Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse, which is heavily inspired by the civilizations of the Pre-Columbian Americas. The books strength is definitely the worldbuilding, and it’s incredible! Rich and complex. And from all the characters, Serapio’s character was the best, he’s so intriguing and memorable. His suffering, and the thin line between his morals, trauma and purpose was so well-written! The characters are all morally grey and so complex, I only wish some characters had more in-depth chapters, like Xiala. Some POVs I found unnecessary. And the political aspects, history, mythology, and culture was interwoven so wonderfully and I was hooked!!

💭 Has anyone read this book, or finished the trilogy? What did you think about it? Or are you planning on reading it?

Mass Paperback Pile 📚

Hardcovers, paperbacks, or mass paperbacks? For me it will always be mass paperbacks and paperbacks - I love the way they just flop open! Though hardbacks are nice to look at and they have gorgeous artwork (I’ve noticed sometimes hardcovers don’t even have artwork), they generally annoy me, and are way to expensive 🫠

💭 Which do you prefer?

Book Haul + Drama Updates 📚🎬

📚
Recently acquired some books! I kept seeing the Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, and I was even more intrigued by @borrowed_prose and @waaavyreads review, + because on @pagebound.co there’s a quest going on for a medal…so I had to get it! 🤷🏽‍♀️

Books Mentioned:
• Ninth House and Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo
• City of Last Chances by Adrian Tchaikovsky
• Birth of a Dynasty by Chinaza Bado
• Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El Saadawi

🎬
I’m currently watching Against the Current (I LOVE Liu Xueyi…so I had to watch), and I’m not disappointed. The show is beyond my expectations. The storyline and characters are so well written. And it focuses on women’s suffering, and it has strong female characters. I’m on ep 42 and waiting for Viki to release the last couple episodes!! If you liked Minglan, Perfect Match, or Flourished Peony, this drama is perfect to watch next!

Book Review 🍵📖

I never read horror books, but I heard many good things about this book that I wanted to try. But this book wasn’t a horror story. The type of story that’ll scare you, and have you keep the lights on because you’re scared of the dark…This book was more of a mystery/thriller, and dealing with psychological issues. The themes in this book are also very, very horrific (there’s a lot of vivid detail about murder).

The beginning of the book was so intriguing, but at the same time, the plot was going nowhere. I continued anyway, I wanted to unravel this mystery. But, by the end of the book I was just left with more questions and confusion. The mystery was probably the most unsatisfactory part…

From the characters, I liked Sen the most, and I felt she was written well. Lee, he confused me and I didn’t care about him - I just wanted more chapters of Sen. I also liked the writing. It was atmospheric, immersive, and detailed. But there was a lot of repetition, and I was more confused by this book rather than intrigued.

Overall, it’s not a bad book, but I did expect a lot more!

💭 Has anyone read this, or plan too? What did you think about it?

Spoilers Kinda:

…and the language barrier didn’t make sense, wouldn’t the Japanese language have been slightly different from a century ago to the present? How were they able to understand each other so well? I also didn’t understand the part of her hair, but she was able to go out in his world without becoming ashes? I also didn’t get the “stain” part. by @fictitiousfables

Slowly my Tolkien collection grows…📚

I’ve never read the books, but the movies have a special place in my heart! I debated A LOT over the illustrated versions and this version and have slight regret in not getting the illustrated, but in the future I will have to get them 😂 I think there’s 20+ books in the Middle Earth series but I’m not sure, and if anyone knows the reading the order I’d love to know!

Also, I’ve been obsessed with bookmakers lately and when I saw these by @no0nedesigns, I knew I had to get them! They’re SO gorgeous, and the material is amazing.

“But for a society built on exploitation, there is no greater threat than having no one left to oppress.”

The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin is probably one of the best books I’ve ever read. The entire series was beyond my expectations…it’s a masterpiece. It’s an SFF post-apocalyptic dystopian (but don’t let that stop you from reading this!).

The author weaves the dynamics of motherhood, friendship, love, survival, oppression and systemic violence, so beautifully. The heavy world-building is phenomenal in its complexity, and the writing is so rich, tense and immersive. It’s amazing, but amazing sounds so inadequate to describe it. The characters are complex, so incredibly well-written, realistic, painful and so raw. The character development was incredible. Nassun and Essun’s conflicted and complicated relationship was so heartbreaking 😭. Many times throughout the book, I wondered, “what’s happening? It doesn’t make sense?”, but it eventually all comes together, and starts to make sense in the most surprising ways. The author did an incredible job crafting this world and characters - each character had an important role.

This entire trilogy was an heartbreaking and emotionally intense rollercoaster, motherhood and oppression at the center of it all. And many of these themes in the book is relatable to what’s happening in the world presently, and I think it’s an important and thought-provoking reminder!

💭 What’s everyone currently reading?

Im in-between several books 😅 and one of them is She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan, and I’m really liking it so far! It’s reminding me a bit of the Poppy War.

If you’re looking for a perfect blend of fantasy/urban fantasy, and dystopian genres, with an interesting and complex cast of characters, and a fascinating world and system…then you MUST read these books!

The Bone Season series by Samantha Shannon is incredible! I am so happy I got these new editions (look at the covers!! So gorgeous!). I’ve been planning a reread since it’s been so long and I desperately need a memory refresh before beginning the Dark Mirror!
