Tiny bird art is where it's at. Was happy to see there's a bird art tag going around to be able to check out even more nerdy, arty bird folk.

The peenting season is upon us! Woodcocks (also known as timberdoodles) have begun their funny displays around our area (southeastern Pennsylvania), whirling through the air at dusk, making their little 'peent' sounds to call out to each other in the darkness and claim their territories. These birds rely on wet meadow habitat for feeding on worms and as a venue to their performance. Meadow habitat is critical for many birds, but heavily threatened by development. Where possible, consider converting large swaths of mown lawn to native plant meadows to create meaningful habitat for wildlife. Woodcocks also migrate relatively low to the ground, making them especially susceptible to collisions with glass buildings. You can help birds migrating through the night by turning off unnecessary lights that disorient them. Pictured: a miniature American woodcock wood carving, hand-carved from salvaged cherry, sitting camouflaged on a bed of miniature oak leaves.

Little Saw-whet owl ornament I made up a few months ago and forgot to share. Off to a good home, though it will be some time before it gets to roost in a Christmas tree.

#notabird - Last year my new year's resolution was to find a fossil, ideally a Megalodon tooth. I made a couple journeys down to coastal Maryland and found a few fossil shark teeth among other fun bits of natural history, but the Meg eluded me. I decided to carve one out of wood to commemorate the year's adventures, might just sport it as a bolo tie, like a Magalo-nerd.

Mr. Potatoo Head action figures, the year's hottest toy. So hot, Sinbad and Arnold Schwarzenegger are duking it out over the last one as we speak. #potoo #birdersofınstagram by @fiddleheadtoys
