Adrian: Designing Hollywood, Dressing America
August 28-December 12, 2026

Mark your calendar! ASU FIDM Museum is opening an exhibition devoted to the work of Gilbert Adrian.

Few designers are more deeply connected to Los Angeles than Gilbert Adrian. After defining Hollywood glamour as MGM's legendary costume designer, he opened his couture salon on North Beverly Drive in 1942, helping establish Los Angeles as a center of American fashion. His career bridged Hollywood and high fashion, leaving a legacy that continues to shape the city's creative identity.

Gilbert Adrian spared no expense while creating the elaborate costumes for the 1938 MGM film "Marie Antoinette." Here you can see the bird-in-a-cage mechanism, designed by Adrian, nestled into the wig made by Hollywood hair stylist Sydney Guilaroff for a close-up of Norma Shearer as “Marie Antoinette.”

Architect Claud Beelman stripped the exterior of the Adrian Ltd. building down to a pure white cube, while the sleek, modernist interiors with touches of classicism by decorator Eleanor Le Maire were painted in shades of creamy ivory, dusty pink, and pale blue-green (termed ‘Adrian Blue’). These colors served as inspiration to senior curator Kevin Jones for the Adrian exhibition, on view now.

Swipe to see Joan Crawford and Joan Leslie inside the salon.

Adrian opened his own salon in 1942 taking over the Victor Hugo Restaurant at the corner of North Beverly Drive and Wilshire Boulevard. The remodeling costs alone were $115,000 and staff expenses were around $3,500 per week. After some delays in construction, the first fall-winter fashion show at the new Adrian Ltd. salon was held in August 1942 to great acclaim: "The wild applause was followed by enthusiastic purchases. After this our business was thriving. Orders poured in, and more importantly, reorders followed," recalled Adrian.

Designer Gilbert Adrian’s parents, Gilbert and Helena, opened Greenburg’s Millinery in 1896 on Church Street in Naugatuck, Connecticut—Adrian’s birthplace—and lived above the store.

While Adrian was known for his costumes and gowns, hats were still essential accessories in the wardrobes of his clientele. Adrian provided bold millinery designs that were often whimsical and cinematic, such as this pompadour of dyed black feathers, the two modified turbans, and the two-tone grey wool envelope that probably matched a custom suit.

In 1951, Adrian released a line of coordinated men's shirts and ties available across the country in the same department stores where his "Adrian Original" women's gowns and suits were sold. Touted as sportswear, many of his shirt graphics were printed on lightweight cotton, but ikat and metallic-enhanced silks were also available for business or more formal occasions. After his death in 1959, the manufacturing of Adrian’s ties seems to have continued at least through the 1960s.

Gilbert Adrian was an artist whose creativity was seen all aspects of his life-not just in the designs for Hollywood or his eponymous fashion label. Finding inspiration in his travels and the people he met, Adrian created these graphite and watercolor illustrations while on his honeymoon with Janet Gaynor in Mexico visiting both Guadalajara and Puebla.
