I'm excited to be taking Grow Your Own Dye Plants with @studioevig! I've always enjoyed puttering in the garden—hands in the soil, fresh air, blooms unfolding. This year will be extra fun as I grow alongside a community of like-minded natural dye enthusiasts. My dye garden palette includes: indigo, madder, dyer's coreopsis, black knight scabiosa, hopi red amaranth, sunrise cosmos and crackerjack marigold. I'll mainly directly sow these beauties—as usual; I'm fashionably late getting started. Do you have a project that keeps circling in your brain? This week for me it's these jeans - no amount of washing banishes that dingy look. So I'm curious, what will happen when I dip them in an indigo vat and try a bit of shibori! Rather than waiting for the elusive ‘right’ moment I'm breaking this project into doable moments. Today: simply washing these jeans and gathering my supplies. I really like doing projects this way; I find when I finally do have that moment I have everything I need and I can just go for it! ✨ Today's creativity joy: seed hunting! ✨ I snuck away to @connonnurseries this afternoon to hunt for dye plant seeds! On my wish list: African Marigolds for golden yarns, Hopi sunflowers for mysterious purples, and Dyer's Chamomile for buttery yellows. Plus whatever unexpected colour-makers catch my eye! I found: Cosmos, bright lights and Crackerjack marigold which are a African marigold! Win! I like the excitement in this moment—before the planting, before the growing—just seed packets, and botanical daydreaming. Are you dreaming of your garden? Life these days feels fractured, doesn't it? Between the many things we do as women, our precious time gets divided into tiny fragments. While making a coat over the last several weeks—a stitch here, a seam there—I realized something powerful: creativity doesn't need large blocks of uninterrupted time. Botanical dyeing fits perfectly into life's little pockets. Gather plant material on your walk, set up the dye vat while the pasta boils, let the fabric soak overnight, rinse and dry after the kids are in bed. In the small nooks, we can create something beautiful. My goal is to help woman create in the midst of life's beautiful mess, making time to create shouldn't wait for "someday when I have time." It happens now, in the spaces between. ✨ Pictured: The exhaust bath from my pokeberry dye vat. Wool arrives today and will soak overnight in this magical liquid. I'm hoping for a softer, more mellow colour to emerge—beauty from what might otherwise be discarded.
