Construction has officially broken ground at 175 Third Street, a new mixed-use tower and waterfront park along Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal.

Field Operations designed the 28,000-square-foot public waterfront park, which will serve as both a buffer against flooding and a place for outdoor recreation, gathering, and flexible programming. 175 Third Street Waterfront Park will bring everyday community life to the revitalized water’s edge, with a multi-use recreation court, dog run, mounded lawn, and open plaza. The project will also feature a continuous wooden boardwalk that meanders through the site, and an expansive native meadow offering quieter, more immersive experiences and a closer connection to nature and the water.

The 27-story tower, designed by BIG—Bjarke Ingels Group and dencityworks, will include more than 1,000 apartments, retail space, and a range of indoor and outdoor amenities.

This Friday, October 2, Lisa Switkin will present "Wild by Design" at Leading with Landscape: Toronto's Waterfront Transformation, followed by a panel on Urban Re-Wilding.

The symposium and exhibition examine 25 years of landscape-led city building on Toronto's waterfront, where a once industrial shoreline is being reshaped through a comprehensive system of parks, flood protection, civic infrastructure, and open spaces that integrate climate resilience, Indigenous reconciliation, design excellence, housing, and public life. The convening brings together designers, scholars, policymakers, and Indigenous leaders, and is free and open to the public.

Field Operations designed the planting installation for Ulla Johnson’s Spring/Summer 2027 show during New York Fashion Week at Gotham Park, a dramatic setting beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. 750 plants and 12 trees framed the show and will now leave a lasting mark as part of the park's permanent landscape.

Two Field Operations projects have been recognized in the 2026 ASLA Professional Awards: Hudson River Park's Gansevoort Peninsula received an Honor Award in General Design, and Seattle's Waterfront Park received an Honors Award in Urban Design.

Hudson River Park's Gansevoort Peninsula brought Manhattan its first public beach and its first Hudson-side salt marsh, while Seattle's Waterfront Park reclaims 1.5 miles of Elliot Bay shoreline once buried beneath the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Together, these projects offer a new model for urban waterfronts as both vital public destination and essential civic infrastructure, whether they sit along rivers, bays, or coastlines.

Presidio Tunnel Tops has been named a 2026 ULI Americas Award for Excellence winner.

The project transforms highway infrastructure into a 14-acre civic landscape that reconnects the historic Main Post of the Presidio to the San Francisco Bay. The fundamental design challenge was to dissolve a long-standing physical and perceptual barrier created by transportation infrastructure and open the Presidio to broader public access. Following decades of planning and the removal of an elevated highway viaduct, cut-and-cover tunnels unlocked the opportunity to reclaim this critical threshold between city, nature, and waterfront as public parkland.

The design balances essential community amenities with an innovative nature playground set within open spaces inspired by the site’s natural and cultural history. Working within an extraordinary setting defined by panoramic views, the landscape is choreographed through landform, circulation, and planting so that every perch offers a compelling relationship to the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay, while maintaining universal accessibility across a 40-foot grade change.

Lake Sophia is officially open! Field Operations designed this one-of-a-kind swim destination within Sojourner Truth State Park — the first new swimming facility at a New York state park in over 20 years.

Lake Sophia features spring-fed quarry waters with a striking turquoise color found nowhere else in the region. A fully accessible 12,000-square-foot crib pool welcomes swimmers of all abilities, along with a 16,000-square-foot guarded deep-water area for those ready for open water. The design also includes a three-quarter-mile ridge trail with overlooks encircling the lake.

Named in honor of Sojourner Truth’s daughter Sophia, the lake is the first phase of Field Operations’ ongoing design for the 500-acre park, owned and operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation in partnership with the Palisades Interstate Park Commission. Phase 2 will expand the park with additional trails and a central commons for events, scheduled to open in summer 2027.

Adopted in 2023, the Reimagine Middle Branch Plan outlined a network of world-class parks and trails for 11+ miles of shoreline along South Baltimore's Patapsco River. This Plan has since been coming to life and one of the first phases of this transformative vision for the Middle Branch is Westport Waterfront Park, the site of a former power generation plant and glass factory. Field Operations and partners are turning this post-industrial site into an 11-acre public park featuring a multi-use trail, living shoreline, community amenities, and a Memorial to the Baltimore Black Sox, set within a broader mixed-use waterfront.

In April, residents, neighbors, and project partners marked the end of the design phase and celebrated the start of construction with a boat tour of the Middle Branch. Field Operations, South Baltimore Gateway Partnership, and Assedo shared updates on key components of the design plan, with conversation centering on how waterfront access unlocks new opportunity for surrounding communities.

As part of Barcelona's 2026 World Capital of Architecture, James Corner was invited to create three ceramic vessels that would simultaneously serve as models for 21st-century gardens while themselves functioning as miniature gardens, all sited inside the Barcelona Botanical Gardens. Twelve other leading designers from around the world were also invited to participate, and all can be viewed on the Parlour Gardens website below.

In collaboration with @bcn3dceramics, our three vessels were intended to recall the original Barcelona Parlour Gardens from the 1920s, which were conceived as a creative hybridisation of garden art with ceramics, painting, and sculpture. We sought to create new, contemporary interpretations informed by digital technology, the plastic properties of clay, machine fabrication, and the capacity of vessels to hold soil and moisture for plants. These “earth chambers” invite and sustain plant life - succulents and species adapted to the Mediterranean - arranged into their own miniature composition.

Chamber 1: Mosaic / Matrix / Alveoli
Chamber 2: Topography / Womb / Vault
Chamber 3: Star Flower / Collector / Showcase

Last Fall, High Line 18th Street Plaza transformed into a vibrant roller disco rink as part of Faena Art’s Amaze, Vogue, Ascend, Flourish, a free public installation celebrating community, creativity, and collective joy. Inspired by New York’s rich cultural history, the event turned the plaza into a unifying dance floor, inviting people to gather, celebrate, and connect through movement and rhythm. Along with the rink, a billboard paid homage to the past with a visual archive of figures who have shaped New York City.

Powell Street's transformation is officially underway. Last week, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie (@danielluriesf) signed legislation accepting a $14.5 million commitment from the San Francisco Downtown Development Corporation (@SF.DDC) for this landmark redesign, bringing the total project budget to $42 million.

In collaboration with @sfpublicworks and @unionsquaresf, Field Operations is serving as design lead on the project, which will bring long-awaited improvements for pedestrians along this historic corridor. The redesign includes wider sidewalks, improved landscaping, and light features that will illuminate the street year-round with seasonal installations.

The project — part of a larger, city-led initiative to revitalize downtown San Francisco — is slated to break ground this fall. Visit the link in bio for more details. by @fieldoperations
