Opening soon on the High Line at 34th Street—the Rail Yard Preserve!

Later this fall, after a major restoration, Friends of the High Line will re-open the park’s breathtaking northern section as the Rail Yard Preserve, offering visitors the opportunity to experience the urban wilderness that inspired the preservation of the High Line as a public park. Among other improvements, visitors who enter the Rail Yard Preserve at 34th Street will be greeted by an improved entrance and a new garden that continues the High Line’s enduring partnership with Dutch landscape designer @pietoudolf.

After 12 years of heavy foot traffic and exposure to the elements, this section of the park was ready for a refresh. Throughout this process, the original pathway has been replaced with a more durable cast-in-place exposed aggregate concrete designed to better withstand the demands of year-round park use and improve accessibility for parkgoers. The project brought together the High Line’s original design team—@fieldoperations as design lead, Buro Happold for engineering, and garden designer @pietoudolf, maintaining continuity with the original design vision while addressing the park’s evolving needs.

With a carefully curated balance of native and non-native flowering trees and shrubs, the new 34th Street Garden will also function to support the High Line’s important ecological functions. Migrating and overwintering birds will find an abundance of seeds and berries, while parkgoers will be dazzled by four seasons of vibrant color.

Can a garden become a little TOO successful? 🌾
I've been fortunate enough to visit NYC's High Line a number of times over the years, and it never disappoints!
This visit took us from 23rd Street north toward Hudson Yards, and WOW, the grasses are thriving! In particular, Calamagrostis brachytricha (Korean feather reed grass) seems to be having quite the moment. Its soft, feathery plumes are spectacular in the fall, but in some areas, I couldn't help wondering if it's become a little TOO successful! The masses of Sesleria autumnalis (autumn moor grass) are equally impressive, creating incredible texture and movement throughout the landscape.
A couple of other plants really caught my eye. Rhus glabra (smooth sumac) was showing off its brilliant fall color, while Amorpha canescens (leadplant) offered a completely different kind of beauty with its fine texture and silvery foliage. It's those contrasts that make a planting so interesting.
The High Line is an extraordinary collaboration, with James Corner Field Operations leading the landscape design alongside architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and Piet Oudolf responsible for the remarkable planting design.
What fascinates me most is watching how this landscape continues to evolve. Nearly two decades after the first section opened, some plantings have become incredibly dense, and I wonder if a little of the original layering and complexity is getting lost in all that abundance.
But that's the beauty and challenge of naturalistic planting. Gardens are never static. Plants compete, spread, mature, and ultimately change the composition. Knowing when to let them do their thing and when to step in is part of the art of gardening.
For my fellow plant people, is this beautiful abundance or has the Calamagrostis become a little too enthusiastic?

Scenes from WORKS 1.

The first WORKS session looks into the HIGH LINE with James Corner (Field Operations) @fieldoperations and Elizabeth Diller (DS+R, Princeton) @diller_scofidio_renfro.

WORKS is a new GSAPP series that discusses projects that have contributed to the production of realities through the mobilization of resources, agendas, and constituencies; by connecting distant scales and actors; and as active components within broader social, ecological, cultural, and political transformations. Underlying WORKS is a question of growing urgency: What is the most meaningful use of our disciplines, our practices, and our forms of knowledge today? What capacities must architecture, preservation, real estate, and urbanism cultivate to participate substantively in addressing the challenges that define the present?

Tongva Park

Santa Monica, California, USA

Tongva Park transforms a former parking lot into a public landscape between Downtown Santa Monica and the Pacific coastline. Instead of a space for passing through, it becomes a space organised around people, shaped by sculpted landforms that divide it into distinct places, create moments of privacy, and guide movement through the site. Elevation changes create a sequence of viewpoints toward the coastline. Topography becomes the primary design language of the park.

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has revealed the proposed Dubai Holding headquarters, a circular building organised around an open‑air atrium and landscaped courtyard. Workplaces and shared spaces are arranged around this central garden, with flexible work areas, planted terraces and open floor plates shaped by the building’s cylindrical form.

Renderings show a broad volume with vertical façade elements rising above a landscaped base, with arrival areas passing beneath the structure. SOM is leading the architecture, structural engineering and interiors and is collaborating with James Carpenter on a façade designed to balance shade, daylight and city views.

Field Operations is shaping the gardens, sculpted landforms and walkways connecting the headquarters to the wider district, extending the landscape through elevated terraces and outdoor spaces within the building.

Dubai Holding has signed an AED 5bn ($1.36bn) construction contract with China State Construction Engineering Corporation Middle East, covering both the headquarters and the neighbouring Jumeirah Residences Emirates Towers.

The UC Board of Regents has voted to adopt an environmental study for UC Berkeley's proposed Air & Space Center, a massive research and development planned at Moffett Field near NASA Ames Research Center.

The project, which will be built on roughly 39 acres of federal land, calls for the construction of 2.3 million square feet of offices, laboratory space, and research and development facilities. Plans also call for a conference center, up to 300 units of student or faculty housing, commercial uses, and a central green space.
