✨️ 19/02/26 - 'Choosing Compassion: Surviving Burnout in Vegan Activism' by Dr Ishani Rao - Book Launch ✨️

Last night, I went to an incredible book launch event hosted by superwoman herself - she's out here showing us we really can make change while protecting our peace 😌

Dr Ishani Rao is a General Practitioner and Urgent Care doctor who still miraculously finds time to be a vegan activist 🔥 She asked the question many of us have probably asked at some point - "why is the healthcare system focused on reactive measures rather than preventative measures?" - and ran with it, tying it to her beliefs of compassion towards all beings 💚

During the very interactive and restorative event, we went over various how we can be compassionate to ourselves as activists, grounding techniques, the importance of all forms of activism big and 'small', what someone just starting on their activism journey can do to help them get started, the publishing process and struggles to ensure ethical printing, and (of course) information about the book at its incredible author…and a lot more 🙏 Parts of it was from the speech @dr.ishani.rao gave and others from well-thought questions in the Q&A 💬

As an environmental and animal rights activist, burnout is a real issue I consistently face. I love what I do, but I often find I easily slip into the habit of pushing myself beyond my energy capacity at the cost of my physical and mental wellbeing - as I'm sure many who are advocating for positive change do. If I want to continue being an effective advocate for many years to come, I need to work on burnout preventative measures. This is why I'm so grateful for all the work Dr Ishani Rao has put into the release of this book; it's all about reducing burnout, protecting you wellbeing, and ensuring we can be effective advocates who give a voice to the voiceless 🤩

The book is called 'Choosing Compassion: Surviving Burnout in Vegan Activism' and you can buy it online at https://www.drishani.com/books (🔗 in comments) or by attending her Bristol book launch on the 5th March 📚

Check the comments for more 🤗

✨️ If you dare to dream it, do it ✨️

So much has happened already here in Geneva and there's still so much to learn as the Global Youth Summit for Change continues tomorrow. 🇨🇭🇺🇳

Being at the UN Office in Geneva (ONOG) has been a great motivator to continue my journey for change.

Highlights so far:
- Being able to present a solution for change
- Listening to other delegate's solutions for change
- Watching so many young voices getting amplified
- Learning from changemakers
- Creating lasting network connections
- The Hall of Human Rights and the Alliance of Civilizations (Sala de los Derechos Humanos y de la Alianza de Civilizaciones / Salle des Droits de l'Homme et de l'Alliance des Civilisations)

I've been inspired by many young voices today as they presented their solutions for change, I hope that they too could be inspired by my speech 🤩

This wouldn't have been possible without the organisation of @unitarhq and @ycdp_ch so I want to say a huge thank you for creating a space where young leaders can come together and create meaningful action today 🙏

I will post my speech at a later date once available.

One man can change the world, imagine what a room filled with young leaders can do ✨️

I am pleased to announce that I will be taking part in the Global Youth Summit for Change this weekend in Geneva.

This is an incredible opportunity presented by Youth Center for Dialogue and Peace (YCDP) and United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) that brings together and empowers young leaders from around the world towards positive action.

There will be a YS 180 Second Segment where we will be able to present our solutions for change. My solution will focus on climate action, which a passion of mine. Our planet is what connects us, globally and throughout history. This connection could hold the key to important positive change for many challenges we face today.

Hundreds of people took to the streets of London yesterday in support of Trans rights.

The Supreme Court ruled just days ago that in the UK Equality Act 2010 "The concept of sex is binary" and "refer to biological woman and biological sex", and that trans women should be excluded - effectively stating that trans women are not women, including those with Gender Recognition Certificates.

This is a huge step back for the UK, a country that prides itself on diversity and equal opportunities.

Thousands of women will be affected by the unanimous decision of just five people, approximately 0.000007% of the UK population.

The UK government has said that this decision has brought "confidence" for women. But I say otherwise. This ruling has taken away confidence for women, those who no longer will know where they stand in terms of spaces, who may no longer feel safe entering women-only spaces. Feminism applies for all women, women's rights are not exclusive. I stand with trans women and their rights to be seen as such, their right to be confident women. The only way we can truly bring confidence for women is to allow all women to be seen as equal in society, and in the eyes of the law.

I am severely appalled with this ruling which further cements my decision on becoming a Human Rights barrister. I will always advocate for what's right and here it is clear, trans women are women too 🏳️‍⚧️

I'm so glad to have attended a PBU camp 🏕

After London Met voted to go 60% plant-based, this weekend allowed me to meet with other university campaigners, learn from them, and collaborate 😌

I'm excited to be a part of the change happening all over the country (and Europe!) and so grateful for @plantbasedunis for everything they taught us during the weekend 🙏

To keep up with the implementation at @londonmetuni this year, follow @plantbasedlondonmet where we will update you every step of the way 💚
