Early concept model for a residence and artist studio in The Sea Ranch for a young family, captured in-situ on the forest floor on a sunny winter morning. The residence is affectionately nicknamed House of the Fallen Pine, after a tree on the site that continues to grow despite lying horizontally on the forest floor.

The project recently passed the Conceptual Submission Design Review milestone with the Environmental Planning and Design department (formerly DCEM) of TSRA. Currently in Design Development. taken in Sea Ranch, California by @figure.office

Kitchen within the newly expanded footprint. If you look closely at the flooring in the foreground, you’ll still see a trace of the former bay window inscribed in the original wood planks.

Home for an Art Director is a minimalist penthouse renovation in San Francisco’s Corona Heights. The central question was less spatial than philosophical: how to renovate for a client whose profession is cultivating visual experience. Figure and the client looked to Kettle’s Yard, Jim Ede’s Cambridge house-turned-gallery, where art and daily life were never separate categories. It shifts the project’s ambition away from mere interior refinement toward something more structural: the reordering of a home so that living within it becomes an act of sustained looking.

The key move was removing the low drywall ceiling in favor of exposed reclaimed douglas fir joists — old-growth timber whose tight grain doubles as a record of its age. The raised ceiling gives the white plaster walls and wide-plank oak floors a warm anchor, while the kitchen recedes into a jewel box so the collection-laden living spaces hold primary visual authority. The owner’s collection of art and objects reads less as accumulation than as an argument about material relationships, one the architecture supports without overwhelming.
