POSTURE, LOWER BACK, HIP AND NECK PAIN IMPROVEMENTS

When Daena first came in, she was dealing with persistent lower back pain, left hip pain, and neck pain and stiffness. Like many, she had tried managing these issues through physio and remedial massage, but the relief was always short-lived.

A major roadblock was her strict vegetarian diet, which included grains daily. Combined with structural imbalances, this made it difficult for her to engage her core and generate the intra-abdominal pressure essential for spinal stability and pain-free movement.

📸 Before – Jan 2023
❌ Lower back pain: 6/10
❌ Left hip pain: 5/10
❌ Neck pain & stiffness: 5/10
❌ Lack of core tension
❌ Muscular weakness & joint instability

📸 After – Oct 2024
✅ Lower back pain: 0/10
✅ Left hip pain: 0/10
✅ Neck pain & stiffness: 0/10
✅ Stronger core engagement
✅ Improved posture & alignment
✅ Increased muscle tone & tissue quality

Through consistent training on the FP First 4 (standing, walking, running, throwing), Daena has rebuilt her structure from the inside out. She no longer relies on passive therapies — she’s built a body that supports itself.

She also began reintroducing meat into her diet, which played a key role in improving tissue quality and muscle development.

As her structure improved, so did her confidence and energy. She was able to take on activities like dancing multiple times a week, going for long walks, and even trying rock climbing — things that once felt out of reach.

In her own words: “Very happy with my progress. I’m feeling like a new person.”

POSTURE, NECK, BACK, AND ANKLE PAIN IMPROVEMENTS

Progress photos of my client Sean @sean_shanaka , who has been training consistently twice a week since March 2022.

📸 Before photo: 5 March 2022
📸 After photo: 23 April 2025

Pain levels before FP training:
🔹 Back pain: 8/10
🔹 Neck pain: 7/10
🔹 Headaches: 7/10
🔹 Ankle pain: 9/10

Pain levels after FP training:
✅ Back pain: 0/10
✅ Neck pain: 1/10
✅ Headaches: 1/10
✅ Ankle pain: 1/10

Sean’s testimonial:
“It’s crazy to think it’s been over three years since I first walked into Functional Patterns Melbourne. Before FP, I spent 15 years slogging through the usual gym grind—bench presses, deadlifts, endless cardio—you name it—and my body felt absolutely wrecked. I had constant aches in my neck, throbbing headaches, a stiff back, and even my ankles and knees would revolt on me. Some mornings, I’d drag myself into work, barely able to focus. I went to multiple physios, but they all focused on pain management rather than actually helping me get better—and it never felt right.

Since starting FP, those headaches and nagging pains have almost completely vanished. I can power through long workdays without discomfort, and my posture feels more natural than ever. Filippo at FP Melbourne has tailored each session precisely to my needs—focusing on the “big four” movements (standing, walking, running, and throwing) and helping to address years of joint calcification. I even convinced my wife to join, and now we work out together!

PS: I still look forward to every session—the entire @fp_melbourne team is fantastic; they truly care about every client.”

PAIN AND POSTURE RESULTS
with my client Albert (age:27)

Before: 16/02/2022
After: 16/12/2023

Testimonial: “Before seeing Filippo I had competed in powerlifting and weightlifting and I gained a lot of muscle mass and strength. However, after a while I began to feel weak, uncoordinated and restless. I could not assume a comfortable position. Things got worse as time went on and I developed pain in my neck, knee and back, a chronic shoulder injury, muscle aches, and a feeling of restriction in my breath. The worst part was that I couldn’t figure out why I felt this way or what to do about it.

After some research I found Functional Patterns, I read about its training methodology/philosophy and saw the results they got. This inspired me to see a practitioner. With the help of Filippo and the online resources (10-week online course and Functional Training System) my symptoms are almost entirely gone and I know what to do to continue making gains. The benefits of adopting the FP principles in training goes far beyond what I see in the mirror.

I also recently completed the FP Human Foundation Course in Brisbane to gain a deeper understanding of the human biomechanics and becoming a practitioner.

I’m grateful to Filippo, @naudiaguilar , @fp_melbourne and all who contribute to FP.” by @filippo__busa

Improving your running doesn’t always mean running more.

Walking and running are fundamental human movements, yet many people struggle with the physical demands they place on the body.

At @functionalpatterns , we approach movement differently. Rather than simply repeating an activity, we use corrective exercises to address the underlying mechanics involved in the gait cycle.

By training how the body produces, absorbs, and transfers force, we work to improve how these fundamental movements are performed—without unnecessarily exposing the body to repetitive loading.

This is especially relevant for anyone dealing with pain or movement limitations, where simply increasing training volume often aggravates symptoms rather than solving the root cause.

The goal isn’t just to become better at an exercise. It’s to improve how your body moves beyond it.

Progress isn’t always about how much weight you can lift.

When you build your training around fundamental human movements like standing, walking, running and throwing, there’s always something to improve.

Strength matters, but so do coordination, control, speed and the ability to handle increasingly demanding movements.

That’s one of the things I value most about @functionalpatterns . Ten years into this journey, I’m still learning, refining and finding new areas to improve.

The Human Foundations course was where that journey started for me in 2016.

With Human Foundations returning to Melbourne this coming February, if you’ve been considering attending, it could be the opportunity to take that next step in your understanding of FP.

Consistency doesn’t always come from loving training.

Sometimes it comes from seeing enough value in the process to keep showing up.

More than two years into working together, Nicole is a great example of that.

If you’ve been curious about @functionalpatterns , I currently have limited availability for initial consultations at FP Melbourne.

Send me a DM or book through the link in my bio.

These clips are from a group chat with myself, Filippo and Steve, reflecting on our own experiences doing the Human Foundations course and what stood out for each of us.

The myofascial release taught in the @10weekonlineprogram and @fp.certified Human Foundations courses has been developed over thousands of hours. It’s derived from the gait cycle, targeting specific areas based on the deficiencies in how you move when you walk.

In my experience, that level of specificity was something I hadn’t come across in any other system. Even with the basic release work, the difference in how my body felt compared with myotherapy, stretching and other approaches I’d tried was noticeable from the beginning.

That release work primes your body for the corrective exercises. It gives you a chance to access connections you couldn’t feel before, and once you start training those connections, things really start coming together.

Filippo also shares what it felt like to connect his lats and glutes for the first time. He was dealing with pain back then, and that experience changed things for him.

Swipe through to hear our experiences and make sure to get on the next Human Foundations here in @fp_melbourne this coming Feb 2027 with @lou.ellery and myself. Simply click the link in the bio to apply.

Finishing the workout doesn’t answer the question: is this approach working for you?

You complete the lift. You get a pat on the back, a few likes, comments telling you how strong or disciplined you are. But when the encouragement stops, you’re still the one dealing with the same recurring pain.

That deserves more attention than the fact that you managed to finish.

There are moments in life when we need to push through. But choosing to train gives us an opportunity to question what we’re doing. If the same exercise keeps hurting, being told it’s “good for you” isn’t a reason to ignore your own experience.

What happens after the session matters too. How do you feel the next day? How are you moving outside the gym? Are you finding more freedom in everyday life, or repeatedly working around the same problems?

At @functionalpatterns , these are questions we take seriously. We assess movement and posture and work towards improving how your body handles the demands you place on it. The aim is for that work to carry into your life beyond the session.

Changing your approach doesn’t erase your discipline. You can put that same commitment towards doing things differently.

If this sounds familiar, get in touch with us @fp_melbourne to talk about your training.

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

Where do I start with FP?

When you’re new to @functionalpatterns , it can be easy to focus on individual exercises without understanding how everything fits together.

The @10weekonlineprogram gives you a structured introduction to the system, helping you become more familiar with the concepts, terminology and your own movement along the way.

The goal isn’t simply to get through ten weeks of exercises. It’s to start developing the awareness and understanding that you can continue building on throughout your FP journey.

Completing the program is also the prerequisite for attending Human Foundations if you decide you want to take your learning further.

Start with the basics. Understand what you’re doing. Then keep building from there.

Results like Julie’s are a good example of why we don’t look at movement in isolation.

Julie lives with a neurological condition that affects her balance and proprioception. The change in her hip hinge wasn’t the goal itself. It’s one example of how the broader work we’ve been doing around posture, body awareness and control while standing has started to carry over into her movement.

When the foundations improve, those changes can translate into better movement and greater independence.

This is why understanding the fundamentals matters.

If you’re new to FP, the @10weekonlineprogram is a great place to start learning these foundations and developing a better understanding of the system.

If you’re dealing with ongoing movement limitations and want help applying these concepts to your own situation, feel free to reach out.

We often hear that more cardio, or higher-intensity exercise, is the key to better health.

And there’s truth to it. Research, like the study discussed by Dr Rhonda Patrick, shows that vigorous-intensity activity is associated with a significantly greater reduction in certain health risks compared to moderate activity.

But there’s another part of the equation that often gets overlooked.

More cardio, or more intensity, doesn’t automatically mean better health for everyone.

Your body adapts to what you repeat. If you’re repeating movements that your body isn’t handling well, simply doing more of them can reinforce the problem rather than solve it.

This is why movement quality matters. Before chasing higher intensities or longer durations, it’s worth asking:

• How well does your body move right now?
• Can you produce and absorb force efficiently?
• Is your structure able to handle the demands you’re placing on it?
• Are you building capacity, or just increasing stress?

When you move more efficiently, you don’t need to expend as much energy to produce the same output.

This isn’t about avoiding cardio. Cardiovascular fitness has its place, but it’s only one part of a much bigger picture.

At @fp_melbourne , the focus is on improving how the body functions as an integrated system, so that movement becomes more efficient and better able to handle the demands we place on it.

More isn’t automatically better. How you move matters.

Health claims online can sound convincing when we focus on one favourable finding and leave out the wider context.

In this study, higher coffee intake in men was associated with higher total testosterone, but also with higher SHBG, a protein that binds to testosterone. Despite the higher total testosterone, free testosterone was lower, meaning less testosterone was circulating in its unbound form and readily available to tissues.

Importantly, this was an observational study. It found associations, not evidence that drinking more coffee caused these changes.

But the bigger conversation around caffeine goes beyond a single biomarker.

Caffeine can increase alertness and reduce the perception of fatigue. That doesn’t necessarily tell us why the fatigue, poor concentration or need for stimulation was there in the first place.

At @functionalpatterns, we’re interested in how the system is functioning as a whole, rather than looking at one isolated marker or symptom.

Sleep. Recovery. Energy. Focus. Movement.

What signals from your body are you trying to override?

If you want to take a more systems-based approach to your health and movement, you can work with us at @fp_melbourne .
