Filwa Nazer (@fillimore ) presents works from her series Topoanalysis in “A Necessary Fiction: Maps, Art, and Models of Our World” organized by the Saudi Ministry of Culture at the Abbazia di San Gregorio in Venice.

Curated by Sara Almutlaq (@sara.endipity ) and Aurora Fonda, with associate curators Zaira Carrer (@zaira.carrer )and Amina Diab(@aminabdiab ) the exhibition brings together historical cartography, archival materials, and contemporary artistic practices to explore the ways maps shape our understanding of the world.

Nazer’s Topoanalysis series uses textile to explore the emotional and psychological dimensions of space, creating intimate topographies that move between presence and absence, interior and exterior.

On view through 22 November 2026 at Abbazia di San Gregorio in Venice.

@SceneNowSaudi: Born in Swansea, Wales, and raised in Saudi Arabia, Filwa Nazer has been drawn to art for as long as she can remember.

That curiosity took her to Milan in the 1990s, where she studied at the Marangoni School of Fashion and Design before training under renowned Italian designer Gianfranco Ferré.

Those years laid the foundations for the multidisciplinary practice she has today, one that moves fluidly between fashion, architecture and contemporary art.

Her work has been exhibited internationally at Selma Feriani Gallery in London, the Asia Pacific Triennial in Brisbane, the State of Fashion Biennale in the Netherlands, Desert X AlUla in Saudi Arabia, the Middle East Institute in Washington, D.C., La Biennale de Lyon in France, the Diriyah Biennale in Saudi Arabia and Saudi Modern in Jeddah.

Working across textiles, sculpture and installation, Nazer explores memory, emotion, transition and the relationship between the body and the spaces it inhabits.

Those concerns come together most fully in Five Women and The Housed Body, two exhibitions that examine how a woman’s relationship with her body is continually negotiated through personal experience, social expectation and physical change.

‘The Hands want to see, the eyes want to caress,’ Saudi Modern exhibition in Beit Tamr, Jeddah, 2021.

Filwa Nazer is a visual artist whose practice ranges from digital print and collage to textile and photography. Her artwork, ‘The Hands want to see, the eyes want to caress’ reflects the essence of Beit Bajnaid in Jeddah, one of the 15 case study buildings researched in the first Saudi Modern exhibition. Tracing the spatial history of certain parts of the house, the artist delves into how it has engaged with time and inspects the fragility and malleability of spaces as they continue to transform chronologically.

The body is not a fixed form. It is something we carry, reshape, and return to.

Through repetition, structure, and quiet material gestures, Filwa Nazer @fillimore explores the body as a site of memory, sensation, and spatial awareness. Her practice moves between the intimate and the spatial, where form becomes a language for what cannot always be articulated.

In The Housed Body, the idea of “home” expands beyond the physical, becoming a psychological and emotional terrain—a space we inhabit, reconstruct, and remember.

This is not work that seeks immediacy. It asks for stillness, attention, and presence.

ARTWORK FOCUS | Filwa Nazer : The Housed Body

Shifting Patterns, 2025
Cotton thread on spongiprene fabric (poly jersey + Nylon core), green polyethylene netting, Nylon Tulle
Untitled 1: 172h x 151w cm
Untitled 2: 173h x 165w cm
Untitled 3: 114.5h x 49.5w cm

“Shifting Patterns is part of Filwa Nazer’s latest exhibition The Housed Body, where she moves between diagrammed surfaces and three-dimensional forms. The work shifts between the visuals of representation and the viscerality of corporality, drawing viewers further into these unsettled negotiations. In this work, Nazer expands her practice further into embodied space. Suspended from the ceiling, these forms may echo some of her previous sculptural installations; however, they mark a distinctly more uncanny feeling. These suspended pieces twirl and stretch, their combinations of materials suggesting both comfort and protection while straddling disfigurement.

Compositionally, the piece is constructed from pink padded fabric supported by green polyethylene netting. This material pairing gives the work its movement and for: the green netting, commonly used on construction sites, offers both structural support and symbolic meaning. For Nazer, it signifies protection, transition, and the unfinished. It is a language of something in flux, under construction, and in process.“

Inspired by ancient Bedouin beliefs that spirits live within the desert, the Artist Filwa Nazer transforms myth into form through her installation Preserving Shadows.

The Artwork — shaped like a black serpent made of layered steel mesh — reflects fear, transformation, and the unknown.

As visitors walk through its narrow path, they move from darkness into light, symbolizing renewal and rebirth.
A powerful reflection on how nature, myth, and emotion intertwine in the vast silence of AlUla’s desert.

استلهامًا من معتقدات البدو القديمة بأن الأرواح تسكن الصحراء، تحوّل المصممة فِلوى ناظر الأسطورة إلى شكل فني في عملها Preserving Shadows.

ON VIEW I Filwa Nazer: The Housed Body

"Here, both clothing and architecture are rendered in their blueprinted forms and annotated in her visual language of motifs, materials, and colours. Sewing patterns and floorplans, shapes often taken directly from clothes that no longer fit and homes once inhabited or spaces being planned for, are abstracted into lines and layered geometric forms, then transmuted through different textures, colours, and thread onto Nazer’s chosen medium. These forms intersect, rotate, and press uneasily against one another, revealing the discomfort of fitting in, growing out of, and of navigating changing spaces, roles, and bodies. "
