“Echos of the Familiar” Group Exhibition، @ithra Museum

The concept of home transcends mere physical space, embodying a tapestry of memories intricately woven into its very walls. It is within these confines that the echoes of laughter from childhood games intermingle with the remnants of disagreements and tears shed upon pillows. Each drawer brims with knickknacks whose purposes remain elusive yet evoke nostalgia. The scent of maternal cooking and the rhythmic snoring of a father create a comforting ambiance, while the presence of a grandmother before the television grounds us in familial continuity. These shared experiences resonate universally, forging a collective nostalgia for “al zaman al Jameel,” the beautiful time.
Saudi Arabia has undergone significant transformations, from the mud houses of the 1940s to the modern concrete and brick structures of the 1970s, culminating in European-influenced designs of the 1990s, that reflects a dynamic cultural narrative. This exhibition will engage audiences across generations, inviting grandparents, parents, and children alike to reconnect with distant memories that spark joy. Featuring a blend of familiar objects and ephemera used in daily life and contemporary art that honors traditions and documents Saudi pop culture.

It was an honor to curate « Echoes of the Familiar », a group exhibition at @ithra Museum, bringing together 28 artists at different stages of their artistic careers.
What made this experience truly special was the diversity of artistic practices and perspectives. It was the sense of connection that grew throughout the process. Across generations, mediums, memories, and experiences, we gradually became a family.

Echoes of the Familiar reflects on home, memory, belonging, and cultural identity in the context of 20th-century Saudi Arabia. Through contemporary artistic practices engaging with traces of everyday life (furniture, photographs, recipes, games, letters, objects, and forgotten details) the exhibition considers the home as a living archive: a place where individual and collective memories accumulate, shift, and echo.

From the living room and kitchen to bedrooms, corridors, and thresholds, the works explore how ordinary spaces and objects become vessels for memory, longing, imagination, and identity. They invite us to think about what it means to inhabit a place, to remember it, and to long for a past we may never have personally experienced.

I am deeply grateful to the 28 artists who trusted this process, shared their stories and practices, and made this exhibition what it became. It was a privilege to witness these different artistic journeys come together and to feel that we were building a strong bond as a group.
🗓️Exhibition from October 2025-September 2026
