Ever wonder what a real-life household budget actually looks like? Here’s a peek into ours.

One thing we really try to prioritize is "paying ourselves first."

Before we start spending, we set aside money for the goals we know are important to us.

Then we cover our needs, and yes, we leave room for fun too.

Because I don’t think a good budget should make you feel like you can’t enjoy your money. It’s about being intentional with it so you can spend on what matters to you without feeling guilty or wondering where it all went.

Our numbers won’t look like yours, and yours won’t look like someone else’s.

The important part is having a plan for where your money is going and why!

As Life Insurance Awareness Month wraps up, let's bust 5 common myths I hear all the time:

Myth 1: "I’m young and healthy, I don't need it yet."
Youth and health mean locking in the lowest rates you’ll ever get. Waiting only increases the cost and risks losing eligibility down the road.

Myth 2: "It’s too expensive."
Most people overestimate the cost. For a healthy adult, term coverage can cost about as much as a streaming subscription or two each month.

Myth 3: "My policy through work is enough."
Employer policies typically cover only 1–2x your salary, whereas a solid baseline is 10–12x. Plus, that coverage disappears if you change jobs or retire.

Myth 4: "Stay-at-home parents don't need coverage."
Childcare and home management carry immense financial value. Replacing those contributions if something happens to a stay-at-home parent costs real money.

Myth 5: "I have a will, so I’m set."
A will dictates who receives your assets; life insurance generates the capital to take care of your family. They perform completely different roles in a plan.

If you’ve believed any of these, make sure to do your research and ensure your family is fully protected. Give me a call if you want to walk through your coverage or have questions! 515-829-8665

Being your own boss means you’re in charge of your own retirement plan, and a traditional IRA isn’t your only option!

If you’re self-employed with no full-time employees, options like a Solo 401(k) or SEP IRA can allow for much higher contribution limits and flexibility as your income changes year to year.

Stop defaulting to what’s familiar and build a strategy that actually fits your life and business. Unsure which vehicle is right for you? Drop a comment below or shoot me an email! 💬✨ ivy.kirkman@mutualofomaha.com by @financewithivy

Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) require you to take money out of your Traditional IRA or 401(k) once you reach a certain age—even if you don't need it! 💸

Since you got a tax break on the front end, RMDs are how the IRS collects its share, which can lead to an unexpected tax bill in retirement.

The good news? You can plan ahead with strategies like Roth conversions to help minimize that future tax burden.

Send a DM if you want to start building a strategy!

One of the most common things I run into is people not realizing that their 401(k) contributions can be made on a Roth basis.

OR, they know that’s an option, but they’ve never taken the time to figure out whether Roth or traditional contributions make more sense for them.

I encourage you to check with your employer to see if your 401(k) offers a Roth option. If it does, reach out to me! I’m happy to help you figure out whether Roth contributions make sense for your situation.

Bonus: Roth IRAs have income limits on who can contribute directly. Roth 401(k)s don’t have those same income limits, so you can make Roth 401(k) contributions regardless of how much you earn. Even if you’re married filing separately.

As always, the right choice depends on your individual situation!

Marriage brings together two lives... and two different relationships with money!

We’ve found that getting aligned on our “why” makes figuring out the “how” so much easier.

Money isn’t just about budgets and bank accounts. It’s about the life you’re building and the goals you’re working toward together.

If you and your partner want help getting financially aligned, send me a message!

Is inflation quietly eating away your savings?

When inflation outpaces your yields, your money loses purchasing power—even if your balance isn’t dropping. Where your money sits inside your savings, 401(k), or IRA matters more than you think.

Keep an eye out for the July CPI coming out on Wednesday, August 12.

Financial freedom looks different for everyone.💸😇⛓️‍💥

For some people, it means being able to visit family without worrying about the cost of the flight.

For others, it means retiring early, staying home with their kids, or having the ability to be incredibly generous.

The goal isn’t just to have more money. It’s to use money as a tool to create the life you actually want.

Take a moment and ask yourself: “What would financial freedom look like for me?”

Because every good financial plan starts with a goal.

Side note: Watch me make a brown sugar maple latte!😋🍁 @presscoffee by @financewithivy

Let this story inspire you to invest early! Compound interest is powerful, and time is your best friend. He didn’t do anything fancy with his investments, he simply gave them time to grow.📈

Also, give me a little grace for the moment I misspoke. It would be pretty unfortunate if $22,000 turned into just $150 after 23 years😂
