One of the biggest surprises from our visit was learning that some of the world's finest bone china is made right here in Laguna.

For over 30 years, Finebone & Aurea has quietly handcrafted pieces for some of the biggest homeware brands around the world. Most people would never guess that what ends up on tables in homes overseas began in a small workshop in Biñan.

We also discovered something we never knew - they make their own clay from cow bones! The bones are cleaned, milled for days, fermented for months, and carefully prepared before they're mixed with porcelain clay.

However, the real story wasn't just the clay or the kilns. It was the artisans who have quietly devoted decades of their lives to keeping this rare craft alive. It reminded us that some of the finest examples of Filipino craftsmanship aren't always the most visible. Sometimes, they're simply doing world-class work, one piece at a time.

ON THE ROAD with ArteFino: brought us to 📍Biñan, Laguna, a historic city that has grown into one of the country’s leading commercial and industrial centers.
Here, we visited the community of Aurea & Finebone, where animal bone is processed into delicate bone china and transformed into exquisite jewelry, decorative home accents like vases, bowls, candleholders and so much more. Needless to say, I wanted it all!!!! Blending meticulous artistry with modern production, their creations showcased the artisans’ unique ability to produce refined, beautiful pieces.
And if you love what you see, watch out for their newest collection at the ArteFino Fair from July 30 to August 2, where they’ll be unveiling designs that continue to celebrate the beauty of Filipino craftsmanship and innovation. @artefinoph taken in Laguna by @fineaurea

Fine bone porcelain—often called bone china—is a luxurious ceramic prized for its luminous translucency, delicate strength, and refined artistry. Developed in 18th-century England by Josiah Spode, it is crafted from a blend of bone ash, kaolin, and feldspathic material, fired at high temperatures to achieve a smooth, ivory-white finish. Once a symbol of British craftsmanship and aristocratic taste, it became synonymous with sophistication in both tableware and contemporary art.

Rooted in this legacy, contemporary Filipino artisans reinterpret fine bone porcelain through handcrafted works that balance elegance, warmth, and lightness. Emerging from modest beginnings in the mid-1990s, this practice has grown into a globally recognized presence, producing meticulously crafted decorative and functional pieces exhibited internationally—affirming the material’s enduring relevance as a medium where history, innovation, and refined design converge.

Act 3: Tempus Florendi
Material: Fine bone porcelain
Form: Singapore orchid brooch

“Time to bloom”

Tempus Florendi completes the philosophical arc of Vida En Progreso. Where Memento Mori confronts mortality and Memento Vivere calls for the courage to live, this final work embodies the reward of that journey: the act of blooming. Having acknowledged death and chosen intentional living, growth becomes inevitable. Flore nunc (“Bloom now”).

Inspired by Singapore’s national flower, Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim, the porcelain brooch pays homage to the city that shaped the artist over thirteen years. Cultivated in the nineteenth century and known for its year-round bloom, the orchid symbolizes resilience, reflected in porcelain petals that appear delicate yet enduring. The brooch form emphasizes intimacy, something worn close to the heart rather than presented as a monument.

The orchid ultimately becomes a metaphor for migration and belonging. Like the hybrid flower, the artist, shaped across cultures, found roots, identity, and form in Singapore. Tempus Florendi stands as the culmination of the trilogy, not a reminder of death nor a command to live, but proof that life, when lived with awareness and intention, inevitably flowers. by @fineaurea
