Hand crafted Fine Bone Porcelain Jewelry

My last @manilafame visit was pre-pandemic so the recently concluded Manila FAME 2026 fair was a visual feast. Seeing it with fresh eyes reminded me that Filipino craftsmanship is not only refined but also soulful, with a distinct and timeless appeal.

This hand-smocked dress from Negros by @puffythreadsph instantly caught my eye, even if I no longer have a little girl to dress. A classic design that comes with so much history too. From the 70s and 80s and up to the 90s, Bacolod based companies made hand-smocked and embroidered dresses for children’s clothing brands which were exported to Europe and the US. I hope more Filipinos appreciate and dress their kids in hand-smocked pieces, they’re so well made and can be passed on as heirloom pieces for generations to come. Better yet, make hand-smocked clothes for adults! I have designs in mind ☺️

The combination of colors of this hand-loomed @binalkay wrap skirt made in Palawan and sold by @rurunganph is so tasteful. I saw these at Habi, spotted again at Manila FAME and haven’t gotten it out of mind. The next time I see this, maybe it’s a sign to finally buy it.

Who knew you could make jewelry out of fine bone china! This strawberry ring by @fineaurea at the @fineboneph booth is a fun conversation starter. The number of DMs I got asking about this ring is proof of that. How much more in real life.

If Bally were to make a rattan bag, it would be this. @pacienciahandicrafts also makes wicker picnic baskets for corporate gifting. With the level of craftsmanship I’ve seen, they can do anything, except probably turn Alexander Skarsgård into a sexy basket.

Gotta hand it to @islatekph and @revolutionn for turning a small corner spot into this eye catching display of sustainable tropical fabrics. I honestly wanted to come close and touch the fabrics but didn’t want to barge into the ongoing discussion.

I’ve bought some bowls from Stoneware Pottery, a Cagayan de Oro based business, pre-pandemic and often wished I bought more. They no longer had the size I wanted when I passed by, but brought home this cup and saucer for just ₱300 each, so reasonably priced!

One of the biggest surprises from our visit was learning that some of the world's finest bone china is made right here in Laguna.

For over 30 years, Finebone & Aurea has quietly handcrafted pieces for some of the biggest homeware brands around the world. Most people would never guess that what ends up on tables in homes overseas began in a small workshop in Biñan.

We also discovered something we never knew - they make their own clay from cow bones! The bones are cleaned, milled for days, fermented for months, and carefully prepared before they're mixed with porcelain clay.

However, the real story wasn't just the clay or the kilns. It was the artisans who have quietly devoted decades of their lives to keeping this rare craft alive. It reminded us that some of the finest examples of Filipino craftsmanship aren't always the most visible. Sometimes, they're simply doing world-class work, one piece at a time.

Fine bone porcelain—often called bone china—is a luxurious ceramic prized for its luminous translucency, delicate strength, and refined artistry. Developed in 18th-century England by Josiah Spode, it is crafted from a blend of bone ash, kaolin, and feldspathic material, fired at high temperatures to achieve a smooth, ivory-white finish. Once a symbol of British craftsmanship and aristocratic taste, it became synonymous with sophistication in both tableware and contemporary art.

Rooted in this legacy, contemporary Filipino artisans reinterpret fine bone porcelain through handcrafted works that balance elegance, warmth, and lightness. Emerging from modest beginnings in the mid-1990s, this practice has grown into a globally recognized presence, producing meticulously crafted decorative and functional pieces exhibited internationally—affirming the material’s enduring relevance as a medium where history, innovation, and refined design converge.
