Exploring the mountain mines of the central Pyrenees

These abandoned lead and zinc mines are located along the French-Spanish border in the regions of Ariège and Catalonia. In the warm months, miners would work in appalling conditions on these mountain tops and then transport the minerals down into the surrounding valleys on cable car systems to be processed. Pictured above are the mines of Montolieu, Liat, Bentaillou and Mail de Bulard. by @finn_hanscomb

Ruins around Europe

Photos 1 to 5: Fort de Bruley in Toul, Lorraine 🇫🇷
Built in 1885, the fort was part of a fortified belt known as the stronghold of Toul. It was garrisoned in WW1 but never saw any combat. It is now in disrepair and completely overgrown, making it look just like a forested hill until you discover the underground network of tunnels.

Photos 6 - 9: Fort Douaumont in Verdun, Lorraine 🇫🇷
Built at the same time as Fort de Bruley, douaumont was also part of a fortified ring. It defended verdun alongside 18 other forts. During WW1 however, it and Fort de Vaux saw intense combat as the Germans took control of them in February 1916 and the French repeatedly tried to recapture it in a battle that would go on for 10 months and turn the area into a crater ridden hellscape. The fort is now preserved as a museum and you can take self guided tours around its interior and exterior. There are also many other ruins hidden in the forests

Photos 10 - 15: Forte Monteratti in Genoa, Liguria 🇮🇹
Forte Monteratti was built in 1831, replacing older defences used against the Austrians and the French in the 1700s. It looks down on Genoa from the hills to the north alongside 15 other forts. It was garrisoned during the riots of 1849, used as a prison during WW1 and then as an anti-aircraft position in WW2. The fort now is derelict and overgrown, but features such as the marble name plaque at its enterance and cavernous hallways hint at its formidable past.

Photos 16 - 20: the village of Escó in Aragon 🇪🇸
During the rule of Francisco Franco, Escó was one of the many pyrenean villages that fell victim to the dictator's overly ambitious hydroelectric schemes. Similar to Janovas, Ruesta, Tiermas and many other examples, the village was never actually submerged by a resevoir and now lies abandoned. The church is the highlight with its bell tower still climbable using a stone spiral staircase. by @finn_hanscomb

The wreck of RMS Mülheim at Land's End, Cornwall.

The ship was carrying 2,200 tonnes of scrap car plastic from Ireland to Germany in 2003 when it collided with the rocky Cornish coast. After an investigation, it was discovered that the reason for the crash was that the chief officer who was on watch at the time had caught his trousers on his chair lever when standing up, causing him to fall and knock himself unconscious. The authorities deemed removal of the wreck too difficult and therefore it has been left to the elements ever since. by @finn_hanscomb
