Cromwell Mark IV, D-Day version

1/35 scale kit from Tamiya

I based this model off a multitude of historical photos of Cromwell tanks in Normandy in 1944. The insignia comes from a tank of the 5th Royal Horse Artillery (7th Armoured Division) that was destroyed in the battle of Villers Bocage by a squad of King Tigers lead by Michael Wittman.

Cromwells have a reputation for being under armoured and under gunned, especially when compared to the German tanks they were facing. However what Cromwells did offer was very fast speeds of up to 40mph which was much faster than tanks such as Shermans and Tigers with top speeds of around 25mph. The Cromwell shassis also made way for the Comet tank which was arguably the best tank of the war, aside from the Centurion which didn't quite make it into Europe in time.

I created the camoflage netting with gauze bandages and strips of paper soaked in PVA glue to emulate hessian tape. The engine cover at the back of the tank was used to stop sea water from getting into the engine when the tank rolled off the landing craft onto the beaches. The large 'Invasion Star' insignia on the roof of the turret was used to avoid friendly fire incidents while the Allies had air superiority. by @scale_war_machines

1/35 scale Tiger 1 (Tamiya kit from 1997)

The Tiger is infamous for both its fierce reputation in battle but also its overly complicated and unreliable design. The designers went so far as to make it completely submersible with only a few minor preperations so that it could drive underwater at the bottom of a river bed. The allies often thought it to be indestructable but in reality, it itself was one of the many courses of the fall of wehrmacht. The cost to create one Tiger 1 was about 12 times that of the cost of a Russian T34 and they also took a huge amount of petrol to run, something Germany was very short on. On top of this they were known for mechanical failures and were often abandoned by their crews.

I roughly based my model off a historical photo of a tiger tank in the battle of Kursk seen on slide 12. The flag on the back of the turret would have been used for air identification to avoid friendly fire incidents from aircraft during German advances. The string of helmets is presumably for the crew to use when outside of the vehicle. I have also attached a hand painted birch log to the side of the tank. This would have been used as an unditching beam, meaning if the tank got stuck in particularly deep mud, the log would be chained between the tracks and used as extra grip to release the vehicle.

The camoflage scheme i used is inspired by that used by tigers during the seige of leningrad. I am particularly pleased with the mud and rust effects i created on this model and cant wait to use these techniques on future projects. by @scale_war_machines

1/35 scale Valantine Mark IV (Tamiya kit)

Inspired by the decals included in the kit and the historical photo on slide 10, i decided to turn this kit into a Russian lend lease version of the British tank and as such i decided to give it some heavy weathering and mud splatters to fit the Russian climate it would have been fighting in. The writing on the side of the turret translates to 'For Stalin!'

The Valantine was britains most produced tank of WW2 but has been a bit forgotten about in my opinion, perhaps because the majority of them were sent to aid the soviets so they weren't as common in on the western front as tanks like Churchills and Shermans. Ive always been a fan of their design however and it seems the russians took to them aswell as while not as powerful and well armoured as Russian made tanks, they were more reliable and versatile. The photo this one is based off was taken of a knocked out tank in the fields outside Stalingrad

I had a lot of fun creating this kit and got to experiment with lots of new techniques such as 'post-shading' and 'pre-dusting' to add some extra realism to the weathering. The tracks were an absolute nightmare however as i used a set of plastic track links i found in a different kit with miniscule pins to hold each one together and they all started snapping just as i tried to attach the finished set of links to the model by @scale_war_machines

1/48 scale Stuka dive bomber from Airfix
(Junkers Ju87R-2/B-2)

This was my first true experience of painting a plane model as well as using an airbrush and i really enjoyed the process. I tackled many things i hadnt tried before with this project such as painting glass cockpit canopies, geometric camoflage patterns and interior details. I really recommend this kit as it offers alot of customisation such as having the engine exposed which I opted for.
For my model I used the Luftwaffe's Greece camo scheme used in the Spring of 1941.

1/35 Tamiya Early Production Sherman

This is my favourite model Ive made so far and I can't stop looking at it. This was 100% brush painted but I intend on upgrading to an airbrush in the near future.
