I live in New Zealand in an old farm house & an old cottage. I love old things, France, old cats, old gardens & old people - anything with a history.

About 40 years ago I bought the piano from an elderly lady who said her father had bought it for her mother 80 years previously. It had sat in the same place in her cottage ever since. When the piano arrived at my cottage, there was a piano stool with it and a note, which said, “My father made the stool for my mother. I couldn’t bear for them to be separated.” My late mother made a new tapestry cover for it, the old one being in shreds. Sir sometimes decides to sit on it. If I ever have to move the piano on, the stool will be sure to accompany it.

I’ve picked up my embroidery threads and needles again, to make some Christmas gifts. I had to look at one of the cushions I made last year to remind myself of stitches and patterns I used….this pattern was inspired by the work of Sue Spargo.

A reward for a day of weeding was a fistful of self sown flowers (including flowering weeds….)…
I hope your weekends are going well.

Native kākā at the kitchen window, trying to persuade me to feed him (I didn’t - we’ve been asked by the local sanctuary to not feed them - they’re worried about bird flu)….

Picking fabric to line the next gift bag, I found some old batik. And these hens have four claws, if you look closely enough. I refuse to accept any suggestions that hens in fact have five or six claws…..😂 (see earlier posts)

Hopefully we’ve had the last open fire for the year. Pinecones collected nearby have been a blessing to boost a slow fire, but I’ve never been able to bring myself to burn these huge cones. In some lights they look to me to be covered with small beaked birds….

“Hens,” my friend informed me, “have 3 claws on each leg,” so the a second bag had to be made that corrected the uni-claw problem….
Still making little gift bags to hold birthday and Christmas gifts…

I inherited my lovely mother in law’s button tin and used some of the contents to sew a border around this skirt, embroidering little red crosses between the buttons. I restored the old leather bag with furniture wax polish, threw on an old Harris tweed jacket and old polished boots, and stepped out feeling I trod fairly lightly on the planet….

Finding beauty. I love to hold antique china, marvelling at how it holds its colour and wondering about who first held it and loved to use it.

I’m looking forward to Graham Thomas showing his beauty again before too long. I’ve always thought it an unlikely name for a rose, but then again, it does start with Graham….(who I still miss desperately)….
