Ilha de Moçambique, or Mozambique Island was once used as a port and trading centre by Arab merchants between the 10th and 15th centuries. Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama sailed into view in 1498, introduced flamboyant velvet outfits, extravagant headgear, Christianity and claimed the island for Portugal.

For nearly 400 years, the island was the colonial capital of Portuguese East Africa, positioned on the trade routes for gold, spices and slaves. By 1907, shortly after the collapse of the slave trade, the capital was moved to Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), and the island’s population declined rapidly. This mass exodus protected it from being savaged by modern development and effectively froze the island in time.

Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Island’s unique architecture, influenced by the former Arab, Indian and Portuguese occupiers, has been somewhat preserved. The island can be divided onto two halves: Stone Town, with its original coral based buildings and Macuti Town, which is made of more traditional Mozambican structures. Many of the structures in Stone Town, including the oldest standing fortress in sub-Saharan Africa. This is reached by a bridge that stretches 2km out to the coral island, where it sits at the mouth of Mossuril Bay.

Ilha de Moçambique is a really epic location, especially for smaller production teams or photo shoots. Lee-Ann was recently on the island for an assignment and location scout.

We do love an abandoned place, especially if it is a rather brutalist Soviet affair. The Avangard hotel complex on Lake Sevan, Armenia, is one of these – a vast unfinished project that was deserted before welcoming a single guest.

The sprawling and somewhat over-the-top complex comprised of several blocks, including two high-rise wings arranged around an open courtyard facing the water.

Construction stopped before the interiors were completed, with the collapse of the Soviet Union killing all funding and the political will to see the project finished.

This is an interesting and unique location, in a beautiful setting.

We loved spending time with a remarkable group of young women in Malawi learning about their dreams and the challenges girls in the region face to getting an education. Excited to share more from this special project soon 🤍

The Stadtsaal (Stadsaal) caves are a series of inter-leading caves in the Cederberg Wilderness area. ‘Stadsaal’ means city hall in Afrikaans, which seems like a rather strange association with a natural cave network. The name was unofficially given to the cave after the National Party’s head honchos held secret meetings there just before coming to power in South Africa in 1948. Graffiti, still visible on the walls, bears the name of Dr Malan and a couple of his verkrampte mates who went on to cause total chaos and strip human dignity from millions by introducing apartheid to the country.

Long before that blot on history, the !Xam lived peacefully in the Cederberg for over 500 000 years and many rock walls in the surrounding area have numerous examples of their art. The !Xam stopped painting about 200 years ago, after being rudely interrupted by the arrival of European colonialists. The rock art is now protected from ruffians, who seem unable to resist expressing undying love for their future ex with a sharpie. Seems all of mankind loves a wall.

The area is safeguarded by Cape Nature and a gate bars entrance to the caves. Day visitor permits can be bought from a number of venues around the nature reserve, which will give you the combination of the gate lock and entrance to the reserve. Not so fast though if you’re thinking of filming there – permits are available but there is a bit of a process involved and a number of strict protocols to follow, especially when it comes to protecting the surrounding areas from heavy-footed, equipment wielding crew and flower-picking art lovelies. And no, you may also not rearrange the rocks to make them look prettier for the shot.

A great place to film, with almost otherworldly landscapes filled with eroded rock formations that change colour with the light, throughout the day. One of our favourites.

We love a location with a great backstory - Gunnuhver is a folk tale that has been passed down over the centuries by word of mouth. This Icelandic folk tale involves a former resident of Reykjanes called Gudrun Önundardottir, or Gunna for short..

Gunna rented her house from a local lawyer named Vilhjálmur Jónsson. One day, she didn’t have enough money to pay the rent but her landlord wasn’t sympathetic to her plight and demanded that she pay up.

But Gunna didn’t have the cash to do this. In place of money, Jónsson took her cooking pot instead, which was probably the only thing of value that she owned. Angry at losing such a precious object, Gunna flew into a rage and cursed him. She also placed a curse over the area itself, which turned the land into a barren and infertile place.

Gunna was one angry lady!

Shortly after all of this and perhaps due to exhaustion from all that cursing, Gunna passed away. The pallbearers who carried her coffin at her funeral noted that it felt surprisingly light. The fearful locals were even more concerned when they claimed to have heard a woman’s voice saying: "No need to dig deep. No plans to lie long“. The already rattled people were then further freaked out when events took another sinister turn and Vilhjálmur Jónsson dropped dead.

The rumours flew. What if Gunna was a witch?  These events surely couldn’t be a coincidence. Without any credible explanation, the people were seriously spooked and no one that had crossed Gunna wanted to be her next victim. Drastic action was needed and they called for a pastor by the name of Eirikur, hoping that the power of religion could lift the curse and they could all get on with their lives.

Eirikur’s had a crazy idea. He was going to set a trap for Gunna’s ghost using a ball of yarn. His plan was to unravel the string and use it to lure Gunna to a nearby hot spring. If you are a believer of such stories, you won’t be surprised to hear that this worked.

The highest town in Tajikistan. Murghab is also one of the highest permanently inhabited places on earth. At 3,600 meters above sea level, with a population around 4,000, Murghab (Murghob) has no trees, no agriculture and half the oxygen of sea level. Populated mainly by Kyrgyz, the town serves as a cultural and economic hub for the region. Located on the Pamir Highway, one of the world’s highest international roads, Murghab was an important stop on the ancient Silk Road.

The area relies heavily on livestock herding and small-scale trade, most of which takes place out of a container market with an abundance of cheap plastic goods imported from nearby China. There was very little in the way of fresh produce – we had to haggle over three rather sad looking tomatoes and were lucky to find a small shop selling local bread and eggs.

Yaks wandered freely about outside of town and the place was rather full of border guards and Tajik army personal due to an ongoing ‘disagreement’ with Kyrgyzstan, which is a little further down the Pamir. Diesel, of rather dubious origin, was sold by the bucket and poured by hand into our Land Rover, which remarkably didn’t seem affected by either the altitude or whatever was being added to the tank.

Sleeping at that altitude was interesting and we had to take altitude sickness tablets daily, making sure we didn’t go over a recommended 200m increase per day. I am pretty sure that dinner at the local hotel included marmot, disguised as stuffing in a paprika (red pepper) shell and served as a soup … Facilities in town really are a little basic due to the extreme environment – the town runs on solar panels, satellite dishes and the sheer determination of the people who chose to live there.

You would have to be determined to film there, but the town and surrounding areas are so incredibly visual that it’s well worth the trip. It’s a unique place. And the marmot wasn’t really that bad.
