If you were a girl growing up in rural Kenya, by age 5 you would be engaged to be married.

By 13, you would go through female genital mutilation and leave school to become a wife and mother, raising daughters to follow the same often pitiful path.

Kakenya had a different plan for her future after an agreement with her father. She stayed in school and won a full scholarship to attend college in the USA and earned a PhD in education.

Kakenya returned to her village to work with the Maasai elders and convinced them that girls should also have access to education. In 2009, she opened Kakenya's Center for Excellence, a school for girls built on land donated by the elders.

Kakenya's Dream, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating girls and ending harmful child marriage and FGM traditional practices.
