POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

In honor of celebrating #Juneteenth, we’d like to re-introduce one of the origin stories of the term “Cowboy”and what it meant to be a #blackcowboy during the time of the term’s earliest use.

Told by Ghuan Featherstone @ghuanxoskillz and Charlie Sampson @bullridincharlie , the first Black World Bull Riding Champion, this story is one that can be heard from almost any Cowboy that spent time on the Hill.

These interviews were cut from some of the earliest footage that director @bfallentine shot for Fire on the Hill: The Cowboys of South Central LA. Unfortunately, it was also one of the many wonderful scenes that got cut from the film to make time.

Have you heard this origin story before? Leave a comment below.

Happy Black History Month. An old photo from the archives, still a great portrait of West meets West Coast.

Last night we regretfully lost one of our own. Ray Anderson was every bit a Hill Cowboy. A talented roper and staple of the Hill, Ray was the first person we met and interviewed. He opened the door for us to come into his home just like he did to everyone that came to the Hill.

Rest in peace, Ray. You will be missed.
