Compton, California Never in my life did I ever think I would step foot in Compton, let alone ride horseback through the streets. Never say never. At the 2019 Telluride Mountain Film I had the distinct pleasure of viewing the film “Fire on the Hill: The Cowboys of South Central LA” and later hanging out with the stars of the film: Ghuan, Calvin, Mike, Fatpack. I had plans to visit them at Urban Saddles in March, 2020 but COVID derailed that plan. Fast forward to April, 2023 when I finally got to visit a place made (in)famous in my suburban hometown through 80s & 90s rap. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have apprehensions as I drove into town, but those feelings quickly faded as I was welcomed in as part of the universal community of cowboys. Riding through South Central and Compton along the LA River I learned some of the realities of gang life and how “The Cowboys” offer an alternative to the notorious lifestyle. Kudos to all the crew at Urban Saddles and the good they do for their community, especially my brother, @fatpack! Hope to see y’all again soon! #ranchlife #urbansaddles #cowboys #southcentralcowboys #comptoncowboys #blackcowboys

Join us in celebrating the PBS premiere of FIRE ON THE HILL this Juneteenth (June 19), a South L.A. story that highlights the area’s Black cowboys and the positive imprint this group is making on the community. Supported by a California Documentary Project grant.   Synopsis: Just five miles south of downtown Los Angeles, South Central LA was for much of the twentieth century an agricultural boomtown filled with ranchers, farmers, and equestrians alike. Since the city’s establishment, Compton and the surrounding neighborhoods have always had a culture of Cowboys. Once common to the dusty dirt roads, this culture has all but disappeared now in a wash of land-hungry developers, apathetic politicians, and relentless gang activity. FIRE ON THE HILL tells the story of the South Central and Compton Cowboys and the last strongholds that they have; a horse stable known as the Hill that was mysteriously set on fire in 2012. This is the story of three of those Cowboys and their fight to live out their vision of the West.    Visit @fireonthehill and check your local listings for more information!
