Orange County Legislator Gabrielle Hill (@gabrielleforlegislature)— the first Black woman elected to represent the City of Newburgh in the Orange County legislature and a former resident on Lander Street — gave Mary Jane Crosdale her flowers at her “Broken to Mended” book signing on Broadway.

Mary Jane started college in 1965, the year Gabrielle was born. Sixty years later Gabrielle says she is still running into the same walls, and she credits a good part of who she became to watching this woman refuse to take no for an answer.

Mary Jane Crosdale raised five sons in the City of Newburgh, Terence West among them. Crack arrived while they were still boys, and it consumed the city for nearly three decades.

She won’t pretend the people here had no hand in how it went. She also won’t let that be the end of the sentence — that a place like this is finished. Support the people, and the city rises up with them.

She tells the whole story in her memoir, Broken To Mended, available now on Amazon.

At Newburgh Illuminated Festival in 2022, Newburgh native and video producer Shawn Strong (@mistershawnstrong) speaks on the negative reputation the city still can’t shake, and he understands why the fear of that past follows Newburgh around today.

But the city he is describing from the past is not the city standing now. Money is flowing in, blocks are turning over, and the people who lived through the hard years deserve to see it clearly while it is happening — because a renaissance you don’t see coming is one you get left out of.

Thirty years ago, Reasonable Doubt changed hip-hop forever.

On a night in the fall of 1996, a Newburgh crew called ‘Da Original Dark Side’ aka D.O.D.S. got close enough to the moment to open up a show for @jayz himself.

E Man Boogie (@emanboogie90sevents) and O.G. Star (@da_real_og_star) still remember the night — taking place at The Rage, a popular, now closed hip-hop venue in Spring Valley, NY — a young Hov and Foxy Brown headlining, the Dark Side opening, everybody together in the green room before the world knew who they’d become.
