On Monday, we’ll read Jamaica Kincaid’s 1985 novel ‘Annie John’, guest curated by @erikojensen, together. For first-timers: we’ll read the first chapter together at the event (it’ll be printed in a cute little zine you get to take home and continue reading at your own pace), so there’s no need to read anything ahead of time. Erik has also put together a rich reading list, which will be emailed to you the day before the event. And if you’ve read Erik’s collection of editorials, ‘Angry at Breakfast’, you’ll notice its opening references the opening of ‘Annie John’. 6:30 pm, Monday September 28th at @hopestradio. Hello Spring! We hosted our first ever “No Skips” all-ages party with guest selector Arlo over at @ultraculturecommunity yesterday! Arlo’s band, The Messy Checkers, treated us to a special performance, and together we listened to The Beatles’ 1966 album “Revolver”. Yesterday we had the honour of hosting @firstchapterpresents first No Skips all ages event at the kiosk. Making the day extra special was Arlo and his band the Messy Checkers debuting a single from their forthcoming album. The day was such a beautiful display community at its finest. Our guest selector for our first ‘No Skips’ all-ages party is none other than local musician and founding member of ‘The Messy Checkers’, Arlo. This event is free for children aged 10 and under and is presented in partnership with @ukoofamilycare. It’s on Sunday, August 30 at @ultraculturecommunity. As Arlo mentioned, we’ll also be serving up a limited edition burger inspired by his band’s forthcoming album, ‘Checkmate.’ The event runs from 1pm until 4pm; join us for a boogie. We’re doing something different this month at First Chapter: we’re throwing a Book Bar! It’s a chance to spend more time with last month’s read, Beloved by Toni Morrison (which deserves the extra attention), and to make room for new ones, because can you ever really have too many books? 🤔 Bring a book to swap with someone else! The evening will feature readings from Friends of First Chapter, plus other fun things. We’ll be back to regular programming in the spring.
