Hello Spring! We hosted our first ever “No Skips” all-ages party with guest selector Arlo over at @ultraculturecommunity yesterday!

Arlo’s band, The Messy Checkers, treated us to a special performance, and together we listened to The Beatles’ 1966 album “Revolver”.

A big thank you to @ukoofamilycare for sponsoring the event and ensuring all the big and little humans stay moisturised.

Thanks also to everyone who came along. ☀️♟️

Yesterday we had the honour of hosting @firstchapterpresents first No Skips all ages event at the kiosk. Making the day extra special was Arlo and his band the Messy Checkers debuting a single from their forthcoming album. The day was such a beautiful display community at its finest. Days like these have always been the vision for Ultra Culture. Thanks to everyone who came and played and stayed and helped us clean up! Let’s do it all again ❤️

On Monday, we gathered to listen to Mos Def’s 1999 debut album ‘Black on Both Sides’, guest curated by my brother, Dom Wagner aka @cazeauxoslo! @themoatmelb was packed with keen listeners (including folks who were experiencing the album for the first time!).

Thanks to all who came out; I dragged a few people to join me for a boogie, because how can you not move to this masterpiece?!

Shoutout to Kailin for the cutest illo capturing the night 🥹 See you at next month’s ’No Skips’ party!🕺

last night was truly magic 💫. to read virginia woolf’s work, and think through what she does on the page, with thoughtful and generous folks on a monday night in collingwood was incredibly special.

and to have @_tejucole (whose own work i’d argue sits alongside woolf’s in the canon) talk us through the possibility of language and what it can speak to, was a dream.

it was one of those occasions where you just had to be in the room. good art requires effort, not just in its making but also in its engagement — and as last night highlighted, it’s a gift that keeps on giving when you put that effort in and show up for it.

thank you friend for waking up at 4am to be with us for a couple of hours. thank you to the volunteers who read out loud with teju — you were all so good!

thanks also to @atongatem @achenyo_ and @cookedwithjack for coming through with the support on the day. organising these events takes a lot, and i’m learning, and i’m thankful for the grace you are giving me.

see you next month @firstchapterpresents. x

so i’ve started something.

the idea is simple: one work of literary fiction worth your time, every month.

we’ll read the first chapter together, and you can finish the rest at your own pace. and even if you don’t read anything else this year, you’ll have the satisfaction of having experienced a great piece of literature. 😎

thanks to @cookedwithjack for hosting us at @hopestradio and @chestnuttreebookshop for providing the books.

if it’s your vibe, come hang with me at collingwood yards on march 30 from 6pm. there’s a link to purchase tickets in the usual spot. 📚🍸✨

Thanks to everyone who’s turned up to a @firstchapterpresents literary series event! So far we’ve read Baldwin and Murnane, and this month we’re reading the great Maxine Hong Kingston!

I spent much of the summer offline and detached from my phone, and when it was time to return to work, I realised I wanted to spend more time away from the algorithm. @firstchapterpresents was born out of that, and it’s grown bigger (and faster) than I’d anticipated.

We have much more planned for the year ahead (including interstate events), and our first Listening Party this Monday has already sold out! Really thankful for the community we’re building — I love you so much, burn city! 🕺🏿📚✨

y’all… this is wild. we announced this event less than 24 hours ago and it’s already sold out. what?! we even dropped extra tickets last night and you scooped them up with the quickness! 🤯

we’re officially at capacity, and as much as we’d love to fit more of you in, we’d probably end up shutting down gertrude street 😬 i honestly can’t believe how many of you are coming out for spiritual jazz on a monday night.🪉🎷🕺🏿

it really means a lot, in these difficult times, to share experiences like this together. huge thanks to @northside_records for hosting us (and for the shoutout on 774 last night!) and to our inaugural guest selector, @atongatem.

if you missed out, make sure you sign up to our mailing list for details on the next event, and to join the waitlist in case we release a few last-minute tickets (which… we just might 🤫)

tyyyyyyyyyyyyy sdm! 🥹
