"There is no version of the hyper local reparations that we are doing that will suffice... we need a federal bill."

During our feature talkback panel, N'nanba (formerly Alderwoman @robin_5th_ward) sat down with @crimsclasspod to break down the evolving fight for reparative justice.

While federal redress remains our ultimate North Star, local victories like Evanston proved the concept nationwide. Yet as these initiatives succeed, they face aggressive legal pushback and lawsuits designed to halt Black progress. Evanston responded by doubling down, expanding their commitment from $10 million to $20 million.

This legal climate is exactly why Equity and Transformation crafted House Bill 5815 (HB 5815) with strategic precision.

Unlike municipal programs facing racial blockers in court, HB 5815 anchors compensation directly to victims of the War on Drugs. By structuring the Illinois Future Fund around drug enforcement impacts and system impacted individuals, the bill creates a resilient legal model. It bypasses conservative constitutional challenges while funneling cannabis tax revenue directly to the Black working class communities that bore the brunt of systemic harm.

Local organizing sets the stage. Smart policy secures the future.

Watch the full talkback panel on YouTube and sign the HB 5815 petition today.

On September 19, The Big Payback came home to Chicago. 🎬

We joined @eatorgchicago at the historic Harper Theater for the first Equity & Transformation Film Festival: five films, each tied to one of the UN’s five pillars of reparations.

The Big Payback follows N’nanba (@robin_5th_ward) as a first-term Evanston alderwoman leading the passage of the country’s first tax-funded reparations program. After the screening, she joined the talkback to share what it took to get here and where the movement goes next.

Thank you to Ken Williams Jr., Richard Wallace and the EAT team for turning film into action. Support their push for HB 4443 and the Illinois Future Fund at the link in their bio.

FirstRepair went to Washington. 🏛️ Our Program Director of Special Initiatives Elisa Walker and Midwest Regional Leader Dr. Jeffrey Trask spent CBC Week at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference, talking with lawmakers, advocates and community leaders about where reparations go next. Showing up in national spaces keeps local repair in the national conversation. The work continues at our National Symposium, December 2–4. Register at the link in bio.

Why do past attendees keep coming back? They leave with a plan, they find their people, and they see repair up close in Evanston, where tax-funded local reparations began.

Join 300 leaders from 60 communities at the National Symposium for State and Local Reparations, December 2 to 4.

Early rates end September 30. Register at the link in bio.
