Informing local reparations, nationally #LocalReparations

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

You know you’re truly successful when your opposition starts fighting harder. Evanston, IL made history as the first U.S. city to pay reparations for housing discrimination. Now the Trump administration is trying to shut it down, but we are not deterred!

N’nanba (@robin_5th_ward) led the creation of Evanston’s program as a city council member and now leads @firstrepair. Now she says the legal attack from the DOJ has only sharpened the movement’s resolve: “It’s emboldened us. It has organized us.”

Justin Hansford, founder of the Ogletree Reparative Bar Association and one of the lawyers assisting with the case, explains why Evanston’s approach is built to last: cities that can document exactly what harm was done, and when, are the ones equipped to withstand legal challenges like this one — “these histories are national.”

This is a defining moment for the reparations movement. What happens in Evanston won’t stay in Evanston. The movement is only getting stronger.

"There is no version of the hyper local reparations that we are doing that will suffice... we need a federal bill."

During our feature talkback panel, N'nanba (formerly Alderwoman @robin_5th_ward) sat down with @crimsclasspod to break down the evolving fight for reparative justice.

While federal redress remains our ultimate North Star, local victories like Evanston proved the concept nationwide. Yet as these initiatives succeed, they face aggressive legal pushback and lawsuits designed to halt Black progress. Evanston responded by doubling down, expanding their commitment from $10 million to $20 million.

This legal climate is exactly why Equity and Transformation crafted House Bill 5815 (HB 5815) with strategic precision.

Unlike municipal programs facing racial blockers in court, HB 5815 anchors compensation directly to victims of the War on Drugs. By structuring the Illinois Future Fund around drug enforcement impacts and system impacted individuals, the bill creates a resilient legal model. It bypasses conservative constitutional challenges while funneling cannabis tax revenue directly to the Black working class communities that bore the brunt of systemic harm.

Local organizing sets the stage. Smart policy secures the future.

The economic truth of chattel slavery is rocking the UK.

The Register of British Slave Traders

Just published, the register is now available online following the work of Professor William Pettigrew, who since 2021, has led a team of nine historians in a project to unearth every known investor in Britain’s transatlantic slave trade and how it led to Britain’s development.

Let us DIG IN TO THE TRUTH.

Whatever animosities existed after the revolutionary war between England and the United States were easily overcome as the profits continued to roll in.

REPARATIONS are the financial amends we need to heal from this global conspiracy of human trafficking, atrocity and accumulation.

The MAGA regime is attacking our country’s first municipal reparations program because it threatens the status quo of the wealthy white few hoarding their money and power by deepening inequality. What happens in Evanston will impact the rest of the country.

Join us in standing with Evanston and to win a future of repair across the country.
