🎭 REFUGE is coming to Dublin Theatre Festival this Autumn 🎭

“All war… it starts with stories, starts with lies.”

Fishamble: The New Play Company and Staatstheater Mainz in Germany, in association with Pavilion Theatre and Lime Tree Theatre | Belltable are thrilled to present REFUGE by Deirdre Kinahan as part of Dublin Theatre Festival this Autumn.

Returning from an outstanding run in Mainz, we are so excited to finally be bringing this co-production home to Ireland.

REFUGE is directed by Jim Culleton, and is an Irish/German co-production with an international cast that includes Mary Murray (Cosima, Holy Mary) and Aidan Kelly (Say Nothing, Killing Eve, Poor), and Matthew Williamson (The Dead, Hammam) with music by Steve Wickham (The Waterboys).

It is a thrilling new play that weaves past, present and future: music and magic. Stories of longing, love and loss tear at the human need to find a place, a home, a refuge.

“Outstanding…incredibly powerful” - Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

“It’s quite a story, and one that hasn’t yet been told…” - Die Deutsche Buehne

“nuanced, emotional story with a socially critical edge… leaves a lasting impression” - SWR

🗓️ September 30 - October 11, 2026.

🎟️ Tickets on sale now via @paviliontheatre.

The performances of REFUGE in Germany are supported by the Embassy of Ireland in Berlin and the Irish Consulate in Frankfurt. The performances in Ireland in October are presented as part of Ireland’s EU Presidency culture programme. Reading events supported by the Goethe-Institut.

As we open REFUGE at Pavilion Theatre this week as part of Dublin Theatre Festival, we’re delighted to share a very special post with you ✨

The journey of REFUGE began in the rehearsal rooms of the Staatstheater Mainz in Germany. While we were there creating the world of the play, Fishamble’s Artistic Director and the director of REFUGE, Jim Culleton kept a diary, capturing his observations on the differences and similarities between making theatre in Ireland and Germany, from funding and rehearsal processes to language, expectations and the day-to-day experience of working across cultures.

Ahead of the show, we’re sharing some of Jim’s reflections from Mainz with you.

Read on to discover what he observed, what surprised him, and what he brought home from the experience.

🗓️ Running from tonight, Sept 30 - October 11

“Hopeless, helpless, in-the-way person”

SILENT is the touching and challenging story of homeless McGoldrig, who once had splendid things. But he has lost it all - including his mind. He now dives into the wonderful wounds of his past through the romantic world of Rudolph Valentino. Dare to laugh at despair and gasp at redemption in this brave, bleak, beautiful production for which Fishamble and Pat Kinevane won an Olivier Award in 2016.

WINNER Helen Hayes Award Outstanding Performer - Visiting Production, 2020
WINNER Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre, OLIVIER AWARD 2016
WINNER Scotsman Fringe First and The Herald Angel, Edinburgh Festival 2011
WINNER Argus Angel, Brighton Festival 2012
