Every day, group X instructors help people become more active, healthier and leave class smiling.

It’s a responsible job. You’re also responsible for knowing that you’re qualified to teach your client group. Your scope of practice defines what you’re qualified to teach safely.

Yet many instructors are confused by the myriad of training courses out there.

Your scope of practice is focused on what you can do. Cheryl Liversuch of EMD UK hears from many trainers who are unsure about what they’re qualified for.

It can be hard to figure out whether a course is a recognised qualification, CPD or simply a branded certification. Checking out your scope of practice is the professional thing to do.

A big misconception is that every course that awards a certificate is a qualification.

Alarmingly, many believe that they have formal training when in fact they have a non-regulated training. You can find out more by checking your awarding body, your qualification specification and your insurer.

Read more of Cheryl’s advice on the FitPro blog.

Do you need to lift heavy weights to build muscle?

Ten years ago the guidelines around lifting, hypertrophy and strength were pretty uniform. To train strength you lifted a maximum of 6 reps; for hypertrophy, you capped it at 12 reps.

Yet, people using timed workouts, performing up to 30 reps are getting great results.

PT, Holly Lynch takes a dive into the research.

If effort is high and muscles work to fatigue, muscle growth will
occur regardless of weight. Meta-research findings contest the belief that muscle growth occurs only in the 8 to 12 rep range.

Any number of reps will result in hypertrophy – the one caveat is that fatigue needs to be achieved.

As trainers, we don’t have to be fixed on the perfect structure of a training programme.

Whatever the client’s goal, training should improve quality of life.

“I’m leaving you!” is the crushing statement all coaches fear the most.

it’s bound to happen at some stage, but often the reason given is that the client isn’t reaching their goals

And coach and client blame each other. But who is really responsible for that?

David Howatson @david_howatson , master trainer, says you need to agree on shared responsibility with your client.

How do you set goals with your clients?

How silent discos are boosting cancer recovery.

One cancer recovery group discovered the healing power of music by chance. When Pilates instructor, Fiona Palmer, handed out silent disco headsets to her class, they began smiling.

Her rehabilitation and movement class began to relax and stop
worrying about exercising correctly. What began as a practical solution, helped the class find joy.

Clients often arrive with ‘absolutely nothing left in the tank.’

The silent disco headsets create an immersive, personal experience.
People start listening to themselves. They become curious about what they can do, rather than what they can’t do.

Fiona believes joy deserves far more credit than it often receives. People show up even though they are not sure they can trust their bodies again.

The music and social connection deliver joy, and people leave Fiona’s sessions smiling. Find out more about supporting cancer recoverers through exercise on the FitPro blog

Dr Linia Patel explores PMDD and whether nutrition can help with PMDD symptoms.

Most women get some premenstrual syndrome, such as bloating, breast tenderness, and mood swings. For some women symptoms are so severe that they disrupt daily
functioning and mental wellbeing.

This is known as Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD).

While nutrition isn’t a cure for PMDD, it can be one part of
managing symptoms. PMDD symptoms can include severe mood swings, persistent low mood or significant anxiety.

The research around nutrition and PMDD is limited, but some women report benefits. Food can contribute to physical and emotion wellbeing.

PMDD symptoms can be triggered by blood sugar swings and inflammation.

Sticking to nutritional principles can help:
Keeping blood sugar stable
Prioritise anti-inflammatory foods
Eat foods with calcium, magnesium and vitamin B6.

Find out more in Dr Linia’s article on the FitPro blog.

Altitude training has lessons for almost everyone who wants to perform better.

From elite athletes, world-class mountaineers to everyday people,
altitude training is central. A common misconception is that air at altitude has a smaller percentage of oxygen. What actually changes is the air pressure.

What makes altitude training so compelling is that it works with the body’s own machinery.

At altitude, the low pressure means each breath delivers a fraction of the usable oxygen in the blood. The technical term for this is hypoxia and it is the root of nearly everything the body does in response.

The human body is highly
adaptable and will begin to almost rebuild itself to function in thin air.

Read more of James Barber’s altitude training expertise in the latest FitPro
magazine.

Do you really need your electrolyte supplement? Dr Linia Patel explores.

Your algorithm may be telling you that electrolyte supplements are a must.

Electrolytes are important. Every nerve impulse, every muscle contraction relies on electrolytes working properly.

Eating a varied, balanced diet will usually give you all the electrolytes you need.

The challenge is usually drinking enough fluid rather than consuming more electrolytes. Electrolytes are mainly, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium
and chloride.

When might you need electrolyte supplements?

Mid-life women are often recommended electrolyte supplements. But there’s a catch.

People can feel improvements, simply because they are drinking more fluids.

Most electrolyte products contain a lot of sodium, which particularly as we age, is linked to high blood pressure.

Read up on Dr Linia’s expertise now on the FitPro blog.
