1 year ago today, Hunter tore his ACL.
Fast forward and we are back on the field stronger than before.⚽️

Recovery wasn’t always linear, but his commitment to the process never wavered. Countless hours of rehab, strength work, and consistency led to his earned comeback.

Way to go, Hunter. Keep tearing it up out there! 👏 fcstarsboys_ecnl09 by @fitzgerald_pt

It’s all in the details. 👀🦵

During early ACL rehab, it’s extremely important to highlight the key intention of each exercises, rather than just going through the reps.

During a step-up, Elena cues Niko to drive vertically rather than forward to achieve a controlled knee flexion and extension.

It can be tricky. The body wants to compensate to protect the surgical leg. Consistent cueing helps the patient rebuild the neural pathways needed to progress a successful rehab 😁🦵 by @fitzgerald_pt

We 💙 our force plates.

We’re working on building towards symmetrical loading as Tyler progresses through his rehab journey.

Force plates are helpful because they let us see in real time how he is distributing his weight. The instant feedback makes it easier for him to correct himself, compensate less, and get used to loading the recovering leg.

Keep it going Tyler!

3-Way Hip Kick🦵

In the early phases of ACL recovery, we use exercises like this to rebuild proprioception (joint awareness) and get used to using our quadriceps and glutes to stabilize ourselves again.

The foam pad forces the surgical knee to make micro-adjustments, while the band forces the hip to fight against caving inward (valgus collapse).

Elena and Niko were dialed in 🔒
The kinetic and verbal cue to push the knee into her hand helped Niko stabilize and use the appropriate muscles.

Controlled, stable, and foundational. 📈 taken in Wilmington, Massachusetts by @fitzgerald_pt

Early ACL Rehab! Pt ✌️

Once we got the quad set down, it’s time to work on leg raises. We worked out of quad inhibition, now let’s use it in tandem with our other muscles to inch our way back to functional movement.

The straight leg raise helps develop quad strength while reinforcing the ability to keep the knee fully extended throughout the movement.

Small details matter. Proper muscle activation and controlled technique lay the foundation for more advanced exercises as rehab progresses.

Quad Sets! 🦵

The entry point to regaining quad activation following ACL reconstruction. It’s a simple isometric contraction where the goal is to actively tighten the quadriceps without moving the knee. Simple, but not easy.

After ACL injury and surgery, pain, swelling, and changes around the knee can make it harder for the nervous system to fully activate the quad. This is known as muscle inhibition.

A good quad should extend the entire leg and result in a slight lift of the foot. Sometimes switching up the cues works wonders.

So early in rehab, before we can strengthen the quad around the knee, we have to get the quad firing again. taken in Wilmington, Massachusetts by @fitzgerald_pt
