From the SBC to Washington, DC! ✈️🏛️💜

Last week, our CEO, Emily Watkins, headed to Capitol Hill with Jeanette Benigas of Fix SLP to talk about something that matters to all of us: keeping speech therapy accessible to the patients who need it. Alongside leading PTP, Emily has helped build this effort from the ground up by gathering national cost data, bringing patient experiences forward, and taking that evidence directly to federal decision-makers.

📊 The SPEAK Project launched in early August and, within just 30 days, collected data from nearly every state, representing more than 1,000 speech-language pathologists, to document what it actually costs to provide these essential services.

Last week, they took that data to congressional offices and CMS to explain how proposed reimbursement cuts could affect practices and the families they serve, and to discuss solutions.

Our families have enough to navigate, and getting the therapy their child depends on shouldn’t become harder. We’re proud to have Emily bringing the same dedication we see at PTP every day to these national conversations. 💜

Don’t forget… all proposed rates are subject to MPPR (Multiple Procedure Payment Reduction).

When ST/OT/PT are provided to the same patient on the same day, Medicare reduces payment for the practice expense portion of additional services. Only one service is paid in full.

That means a published reimbursement rate isn’t always what a provider actually receives. So yes, the proposed reimbursement rates are already being lowered, and MPPR will reduce payment even further.

Businesses may have been able to sustain that hit before, but if the proposed rates stand, that may no longer be the case.

We have lawyers, lobbyists, millions of data points, and a plan.

And this fight is officially going to Congress. 🇺🇸

Yesterday, we had our first full strategy meeting with the team we hired to help us fight these reimbursement cuts, and one we walked away with on unexpected assignment.

We need patients, families, care partners, and their stories.

We already have HUNDREDS of letters, but we need THOUSANDS.

This is no longer just about SLPs talking to SLPs and sending our comments to CMS. We need the people who depend on our services standing beside us and telling CONGRESS, not CMS, their stories.

CMS put numbers on what it believes our treatment is worth, based on the recommendations from the RUC (ASHA was a part of that committee). 
These PROPOSED values will determine whether practices can hire SLPs, keep their doors open, and continue serving patients.

We need to keep showing up, and we all need to SPEAK. Can we get to 1000 SLP and SLPA CMS comments with 1000 letters from families, friends and allies? We think so!

SLPs: we need your help reaching the people who love us.

We’ve made it easy for your patients, families, friends, and loved ones to speak up about why access to speech-language pathology isn’t a privledge, and why reimbursement has to support the real cost of providing care.

We created everything you need to get this outside the SLP echo chamber:
🎥 A video made specifically for patients & families 📲 A shareable social media graphic ✍️ A simple jot form where they can quickly answer 5 prompts to tell their story, and we’ll turn it into a personalized letter to government officials.

Your job: SHARE IT.
Send the video directly to families. Post the graphic on your socials. Share the link with former patients. Ask your own friends and family to participate.

We need more than SLPs sending comments to CMS. We need beneficiaries of the programs most at risk to urge government officials to pressure CMS to take us seriously.
