Ruinart Champagne Sommelier UK Challenge 2026
It is Caroline's Fiot's first visit to the UK as Ruinart's new cellar master taking up her appointment in January this year. It is the Maison's 9th competition which first started in the US. This year the theme was rosé sparklings. Thankfully I was only a guest - 29 somms got through the first selection process to take on the challenge of identifying four rosé sparkling wines in the blind tasting held in The Dorchester Hotel's Crystal Suite in London. The new PNTX 20, La Grande Année, Bollinger B16 and La Côte aux Enfants 2015 were some of the treasures Bollinger unveiled at a prestigious lunch at the Michelin-star Hide restaurant in London. The 2025 harvest was superb says Bollinger MD Charles-Armand de Belenet. It may even become a vintage year?! You can enjoy a historic tipple to celebrate the historic loan of the Bayeux Tapestry from France (even if you're not lucky enough to have tickets to see it for real at the British Museum).
Battle Brewery is an award-winning brewery, located in the heart of 1066 country, East Sussex. They specialise in brewing Real Ales from the finest local products as well as their range of keg beers.

Champagne Palmer in Reims was established in 1947 and named after the luxury biscuits Huntley and Palmers with the vision to appeal to the UK market. Their wines are quite delicious and proof of their quality is that they now feature in restaurants and brasseries throughout the world including all the 3* restaurants in the UK. I went to visit for The Buyer to find out more and preview their prestige cuvée Grands Terroirs 2018. Champagne Palmer's vineyards are in the Montagne de Reims and it was a treat to stay overnight at their beautiful hotel in Chigny-les-Roses @domaineduchalet Look out for my article coming soon. @champagnepalmer @fdemouy by @fizzonfriday

Lugana wines from Lake Garda have been largely undiscovered outside of Italy but their fresh minerality is worth discovering. Who knew that the expressions of Lugana include five different styles from sparkling to years-aged Riserva. The north of Spain including Rioja has so many different styles of wine. I visited Rioja and the Basque region to find out more and discovered many sparkling wines as well as great whites, reds, rosé and sweet wines. by @fizzonfriday

A real treat to be at the launch of HiDE 2021 - Black Chalk's first single vineyard English sparkling wine named after their HiDE plot.

How apt that the launch is at the fabulous @hide_restaurant in London's Mayfair and it is now available by the glass there.

Black Chalk is made from passionate wine growers since 2018 in the chalk lands in the Test Valley near Andover in Hampshire and has been a favourite of mine ever since.

'HiDE is not the easiest vineyard to manage with lots of rocky flint,' says CEO Jacob Leadley and wine maker Zoë Driver. But the results are worth the effort. HiDE is a pure yet characterful expression. Only 2682 bottles have been produced.

Always wanting to develop a true traditional method vintage English sparkling and not just trying to ape a Champagne style, Black Chalk has successfully won many awards.

Black Chalk has a portfolio of eight wines (including HiDE): Classic (sparkling); Wild Rose (sparkling): Dancer In Pink (still rosé); and then three wines which have a particularly technical focus: Paragon (Blanc de Blancs); Inversion (Blanc de Noirs); 89.6 (Blanc de Blancs exclusively in magnum) all from the Black Chalk’s estate vineyards. Since 2022, they have also made a still chardonnay, Rumour Has It, from the Kent North Downs.
If you haven't already you must try Black Chalk sparkling wines or visit their Hampshire estate. I think the wines will become a favourite. by @fizzonfriday

@fizzonfriday treat for the Bank Holiday weekend. Hundred Hills vineyards are the highest in the UK set in beautiful Oxfordshire Chilterns near Henley - less than an hour out of London. Delightful vintage traditional method premium sparkling wines with Blancs de Blancs, Blancs de Noir and Rosé. 🥂 by @fizzonfriday

I discovered there are major changes ahead in the Languedoc wine region. There's approval for a new appellation Montpeyroux and more AOP accreditations are in the pipeline - Cabrières and Pézenas. Also, just as Terrasses du Larzac celebrates its 10th anniversary, there's exciting news that there will shortly be whites included in the AOP. I joined an international group of journalists for The Buyer for a week-long tour of the Languedoc region to taste the up-and-coming top quality of their wines. St Clement is the newest venture of Nick Jones, creator of Soho House, near the Temple Inns of Court. Very elegant (with a small courtyard garden and terrace at the front) the restaurant will shortly be joined by a hotel too. The joy about St Clement (unlike the Soho House chain) is that you don't have to be a member to dine or sip a drink at the bar. I think Nick Jones is onto something with this new concept in the heart of London near the Thames! Congrats - it's a delightful restaurant and love the house champagne Billecart-Salmon! by @fizzonfriday

Beautiful Champagne Deutz with beautiful Japanese cuisine - I can't think of a better treat for fizzonfriday.
🥂Champagne Deutz is a very elegant, premium champagne and one of my favourites. It's still quite a hidden gem in the UK but is unlikely to stay that way! Watch this space and look out for my article in The Buyer coming soon.
