Hardangervidda or Sarek — which one?

Both are Level 3 winter expeditions. Both involve travelling on skis, hauling pulks, winter camping and operating as part of an expedition team.

But that’s roughly where the similarities end.

Hardangervidda 🇳🇴 is the classic crossing. A huge, exposed high-mountain plateau where the terrain continually rolls beneath you — climb, descend, repeat. It’s also a landscape steeped in polar history, including Roald Amundsen’s infamous attempted winter crossing in 1896.

Sarek 🇸🇪 takes you much further north, inside the Arctic Circle. Instead of crossing an open plateau, we travel through enormous mountain valleys beneath some of Sweden’s highest peaks. It’s colder, more remote and considerably less well known.

We often describe Sarek as our mini-Svalbard expedition — a serious Arctic journey and a natural stepping stone towards bigger polar objectives.

Same level. Different wild.

In 70 days I will be riding solo and unsupported to the South Pole, and today, I wanted to take you through what I’ll be towing behind my bike.

MY PULK!

Now for those new to the polar world a pulk is a sled. It’s what I will use to carry all of my expedition equipment.

I’ll be taking a @fjellpulken Traverse 185 which will attach to my bike with a hitch and a rope trace. At the start line it will weigh around 125kg!  
The pulk has a huuuuge carry capacity so loads of room for all my food and gear, but it’s also super stable so it won’t get blown over by the strong winds.

Despite all of this I have no idea how smoothly she’ll be moving down in Antarctica because apparently the snow is friction-full (is that a word?). Essentially no glide so she’s gonna feel like a dead weight!

The wildest part of Europe?

Around 100 km north of the Arctic Circle lies Sarek National Park — nearly 2,000 km² of mountains, glaciers and deep valleys in Swedish Lapland.

There are no roads into the national park, no settlements inside it and, unlike many Scandinavian mountain areas, no convenient network of staffed huts. After Day 1, we leave the marked trail network behind and head into the heart of Sarek.

Sarek contains six of Sweden’s thirteen 2,000 m summits, including 2,089 m Sarektjåkkå, Sweden’s second-highest mountain, with around 100 glaciers amongst them.

In winter, the landscape is transformed. Lakes and rivers freeze, the valleys fill with snow and become our highways through the mountains.

For the next week, we’ll travel through that landscape on Nordic skis, hauling everything we need to remain self-sufficient behind us in pulks.

Cold, remote and genuinely wild.

Do we use backpacks or pulks?
When going hut-to-hut: backpacks.
When camping: pulks.
The reason is simple: we can keep the weight in our backpacks relatively low - around 15 kg - when staying in huts. There’s simply less to bring: no tent, no winter sleeping bag, no air mat… and, heaviest of all, less food.
But both setups have their advantages.
Not having all that weight constantly on your shoulders can be a literal big plus. 😅
On the other hand, when going uphill, the backpack gives you extra weight and therefore more grip. A pulk tends to do the opposite: it pulls you backwards and, quite literally, wants to drag you back down.
