PC: @elenaray3 thank you so much for your amazing work ❤️

Thank you to everyone who showed out for our first protest in solidarity with El-Fasher and Sudan in Portland, Maine. We hope that our solidarity continues to grow until Sudan is liberated in our lifetime, and that all Sudanese people are able to live in harmony as Sudanese like we once did. We also stand in everlasting solidarity with the people of the global south in South Sudan, Congo, Palestine, Haiti, Tigray, ALL occupied exploited, and colonized lands. We are grateful to all donors who’ve supported the El-Fasher Relief Fund. Thank you, this is just the beginning. #SayDarfur #EyesOnDarfur #KeepEyesOnSudan #FreeSudan taken in Monument Square, Portland ME by @fkasully

Not even sure how to go about this or serve this situation justice, but I will try my best. For the sake of my people and the legacy of my ancestors. As many of the people in my community know, I am a refugee. My family sought refuge in the United States through the United Nations in 2003 following the genocide that unfolded in Darfur, West Sudan. Many don’t know that the actual genocide in Darfur predates the timeline that is published across many sources on the internet. My family experienced the genocide first hand in the early 90s. When i visited Sudan in Summer of 2022, I experienced the lived oral stories of the genocide with my family. When the Janjaweed first entered my parents village, it was chaotic. My mother, 15 at the time, had just returned home from schooling in Gaderef, East Sudan. They burned her village and she saw her closest friends die right in front of her. They were children, all between the ages of 10-17 years old. My mother and her brother prepared to die as martyrs that day. At 15 & 17, my mother and uncle stood on the front line supporting the forces that were protecting their native homeland. My mom supplied meals for the Darfuri soldiers, while her brother (Khali Ezzo) fought in the war. Haboba (grandma) recalls the first day of the genocide as “the day of death.” She had already accepted that she lost her children in the genocide. Her first borns - dying as martyrs during their most youthful & formative years.
…
My father fled Darfur as a teenager when the genocide erupted in the early 90s. He is unable to recall the many atrocities of the genocide due to trauma. However, the aftermath is felt and passed on to us. I’ve been unable to put the experiences of the genocide into words until now. The living memories make my chest tight & my body weak. My dad fled Khartoum in early 2000 after I was conceived. He sought protection in Egypt with my uncle Waleed. At the time, the gov was threatening to execute those who were actively speaking against the gov and for the liberation of Darfuri & other marginalized indigenous African groups in Sudan facing persecution. I’m running out of space. sry. thank u 4 the article @kaamilahmed taken in Darfur by @fkasully
