An unassuming landscape of pure waves gradually invites and incorporates the clarinet into a harmonically disorienting, at times perplexing, and physically hypnotic space. Mimicking the clarinet’s strange acoustic qualities – triangle waves at a lower dynamic and gradual squaring as the sound is pushed louder – the pure wave “ensemble” begins as stark and pure triangle wave foundation, gradually starting to move and snowball forward. Before the listener realizes it, the landscape has shifted to a buzzing swarm of square waves, the clarinetist has climbed to a higher register, and a composite diorama of living and non-living sound elements has unfolded into something more akin to an accordion. Accordion – the people’s instrument, the temperamental nomad.

It exclaims with us.
It celebrates with us.
It weeps with us.
It lulls us.
What is left to do when one does not know where home is or where to go? Play. Play on. To play is to survive.

Tracks 1 and 3 were tracked in May 2025 in Detroit, MI. Track 2 was tracked in December 2025 also in Detroit.

Helen Anahita Wilson’s Nightshade is an album rooted in the strange intelligence of the natural world.

Built around the Solanaceae family, a lineage of plants associated with nourishment, poison, ritual, medicine and myth.

Nightshade transforms biological signals into sound. Using plant biodata to trigger and shape instrumentation, Wilson creates a series of duets where the organic and electronic dissolve into one another.

Across nine pieces, environments shift between delicate, hallucinatory and quietly ominous: edible species sit beside toxic relatives, field-like textures fold into electroacoustic composition, and moments of intimacy give way to something unknowable.

Experimental without losing its sense of wonder, Nightshade is less a document of plants than an attempt to listen with them.

Across five movements, the project transforms chaos and devastation of Passchendaele into a dense barrage of sound, where historical memory is rendered through abrasive textures and shifting atmospheres.

Flicker

In 2021, Dawid began working on a new record, Flicker. Eventually, he abandoned the project and turned toward Heartsink, released in 2022 by Oxen Records.

Flickering is meant to imply a sense of overwhelm — a constant switching between radically opposing states: between black to white, awake to asleep, love to hatred, sobriety to intoxication, clarity to dissociation. Again and again, cycling endlessly.

Within this context, the binary movement between 1 and 0 becomes symbolic: a recurring transition between presence and absence, between reality and fantasy. A perpetual flickering between opposing states of being.

On. Off. On. Off. No middle ground.

And sometimes, after enough cycles, you no longer remember which state was real to begin with.

For bandcamp Friday I’m placing a lot of the modern era releases on sale digitally for $1 ($2 for double discs)

What I consider the modern era are the releases that started coming out when I purchased a home, so from FDR73 (Eryck Abecassis) onwards. My life has been incredibly busy since then, between being a homeowner, a parent, a partner, starting a mastering studio venture and at the time working a full time warehouse gig. It’s been a wild ride

I’ve been beating myself up a lot lately because of the difficulty I’ve been having getting some of these releases out. Please trust me when I say it’s not lost on me that the øjeRum and Verónica Cerrotta releases are a year into pre-order at this point. I am embarrassed at that. But when I take stock into what I’ve achieved with Flag Day since FDR73 I have to give myself some grace. I was able to release 22 albums while trying to balance all of the above.

I’m not perfect, I make mistakes, but I can at least say I’m not dumb and I won’t repeat mistakes. Putting all those albums into pre-order was a mistake and won’t be repeated. I’m really looking forward to finishing up these last two albums I have stuck in pre-order limbo.

I’m incredibly honored to have mastered four albums by Conrad Schnitzler for Flip-Flap: Nachtfahrt, LichtPunkte, Upwards, and Windmills. Now available to order through Flag Day Recordings if you’re in the US.

“Schnitzler was one of the true radicals of German experimental electronic music. A founding member of Kluster, an early member of Tangerine Dream, and one of the forces behind Berlin’s legendary Zodiak Free Arts Lab, he spent decades treating electronics, tape, rhythm, noise, and found sound as raw materials rather than limitations. His approach helped push electronic music away from conventional ideas of melody, instrumentation, and composition and toward something stranger, more physical, and completely open-ended.”

Black metal fans might recognize his work in Mayhem’s seminal work, Deathcrush

What makes Schnitzler’s work so enduring is that it never feels concerned with fitting neatly into a genre. It can be hypnotic, mechanical, cosmic, playful, abrasive, beautiful, or unsettling sometimes all within the same piece.

Windmills is a particularly fascinating example: 33 tracks described by Schnitzler himself as “Electro Cosmic Metal Industrial,” built from four continuous electric pieces and largely avoiding conventional keyboard-based composition.

Upwards presents 19 compact “electric miniatures,” constantly shifting direction while emphasizing the journey over any conventional destination.

LichtPunkte is denser and more expansive, filled with hovering melodies, intricate layers, and forward-moving electronic structures, a remarkable document of Schnitzler’s Berlin Kosmische approach.

And Nachtfahrt moves through darker, more hypnotic territory, transforming familiar sounds into something warped and unfamiliar, shifting between dreamlike weightlessness and noir tension.

I had the privilege of mastering all four releases at Vitória Régia Studios, helping prepare these pieces for their new editions while preserving the uncompromising character that makes Schnitzler’s music so important. Enjoy! by @flagdayrecordings
