João Castro Pinto (Lisbon, 1977) has been active since the late 1990s as a composer / performer of experimental music, as well as a sound and intermedia artist. His production comprehends the domains of soundscape composition, intermedia art, sound design, live electronics improvisation (solo and with instrumentalists), electroacoustic / acousmatic music and radio art.

Guillermo Pizarro uses field recordings, tapes, harsh noise, synths and ambient textures to achieve his cinematic storytelling through sound. He also runs Flag Day Recordings, a US label focused on promoting experimental music, harsh noise, ambient and soundtracks. Starting in 2024, Flag Day has added a production branch via Vitória Régia Studios focused on mastering, mixing and film scoring.

Zottoh is the solo project of Santiago Soto, centered on electric guitar feedback, drones, and noise. Through amplification systems and spatial arrangements, the project explores feedback, resonance, and the physical relationship between sound, instrument, and environment.

Flicker

In 2021, Dawid began working on a new record, Flicker. Eventually, he abandoned the project and turned toward Heartsink, released in 2022 by Oxen Records.

Flickering is meant to imply a sense of overwhelm — a constant switching between radically opposing states: between black to white, awake to asleep, love to hatred, sobriety to intoxication, clarity to dissociation. Again and again, cycling endlessly.

Within this context, the binary movement between 1 and 0 becomes symbolic: a recurring transition between presence and absence, between reality and fantasy. A perpetual flickering between opposing states of being.

On. Off. On. Off. No middle ground.

And sometimes, after enough cycles, you no longer remember which state was real to begin with.

“Schnitzler was one of the true radicals of German experimental electronic music. A founding member of Kluster, an early member of Tangerine Dream, and one of the forces behind Berlin’s legendary Zodiak Free Arts Lab, he spent decades treating electronics, tape, rhythm, noise, and found sound as raw materials rather than limitations. His approach helped push electronic music away from conventional ideas of melody, instrumentation, and composition and toward something stranger, more physical, and completely open-ended.”

Black metal fans might recognize his work in Mayhem’s seminal work, Deathcrush

What makes Schnitzler’s work so enduring is that it never feels concerned with fitting neatly into a genre. It can be hypnotic, mechanical, cosmic, playful, abrasive, beautiful, or unsettling sometimes all within the same piece.

Windmills is a particularly fascinating example: 33 tracks described by Schnitzler himself as “Electro Cosmic Metal Industrial,” built from four continuous electric pieces and largely avoiding conventional keyboard-based composition.

Upwards presents 19 compact “electric miniatures,” constantly shifting direction while emphasizing the journey over any conventional destination.

LichtPunkte is denser and more expansive, filled with hovering melodies, intricate layers, and forward-moving electronic structures, a remarkable document of Schnitzler’s Berlin Kosmische approach.

And Nachtfahrt moves through darker, more hypnotic territory, transforming familiar sounds into something warped and unfamiliar, shifting between dreamlike weightlessness and noir tension.

I had the privilege of mastering all four releases at Vitória Régia Studios, helping prepare these pieces for their new editions while preserving the uncompromising character that makes Schnitzler’s music so important. Enjoy!

Here’s a clip from the b-take of the twirly #eflatclarinet set Vanity during my winter sessions for We Only Have But A Moment. All of these sets practically have a warm-up period built into the form, although there are certain states of embouchure I was only able to access when I was recording each track separately. I am almost never able to get to these states when I play Peace and Vanity back to back. I feel like there is a limit to how much range and pressure my embouchure can take after having played the bass for 20 minutes prior to this! 🤣 Now out on @flagdayrecordings #soloclarinet #newmusic #improvisedmusic #microtonalmusic

I’m very pleased to present my latest CD release on US label Flag Day with beautiful design and artwork by Rutger Zuydervelt.

I now have a number of artist copies for sale through my Bandcamp (link in bio).

The title ‘A Yellow Minute’ comes from the Serbo-Croatian phrase, "žuta minuta" - which translates as a moment of madness, rage or a sudden flash of extreme emotion.

The album was mastered by Guillermo Pizarro at Vitória Régia Studios with artwork and sleeve design by Rutger Zuydervelt.

‘A Yellow Minute’ is built around a collection of sound effects and spots sounds originally recorded for a horror film that in the end never got made. Severed from their original purpose I revisited these ambiguous sounds over a decade later, combining them with more current experiments employing found tapes, bottled feedback, crude electronics and processed field recordings. The result is a darkly surreal, nightmarish soundscape haunted by malevolent entities, unknown spirits and spectral presences.

Thanks to Marek “Lokis” Nawrot at Anxious Magazine for the thoughtful review:

“An elegantly composed, forty-minute journey into the darkened recesses of the self… It's like coming face to face with inner, imagined insecurities—or perhaps "half-nightmares"—which are here visualised in the form of sound. It's incredible how directly they assert their presence in the stereo spectrum—a certain personality that imbues the whole thing with a strange aura of uncanniness. It's not fear, though some might call it that, but rather an invitation to exploration, a personal confrontation…The spectral, slightly suffocating electronics, reminiscent of Andrew Liles's best, early releases, are very much in place here. Its subdued sound, and the sparkling frequencies at the edges, only add to the supernatural effect.”
