A platform organising live art exhibitions in Amsterdam.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We are pleased to announce the launch of COKO Space this September, which will host a new series of performance evenings: the COKO Happenings.
COKO believes in the transformative power of art as a peaceful yet powerful force for change, resistance, and collective imagination.
In times marked by rising ultranationalism, closing borders, and the persecution of people based on color, gender and cultural background, COKO strives to create a space that fosters resilience, celebrates diversity, and promotes inclusion.

COKO Happenings
The new performance program will unfold over a series of curated evenings throughout the year, led by COKO director Bea Correa & FLAM founder Rose Akras.

You are warmly invited to join us at the official opening of COKO Space featuring the very first COKO Happening:

Trashed My Title by Avantika Tibrewal
A world that you love to hate and hate to love

Thursday 25.09.25 20:00 h
COKO Space, Prinsengracht 526 H
* wheelchair accessible

RSVP: link in @coko.space bio
* COKO Space has limited capacity, so reserve your place in time!

Trashed My Title invites you an experience that both dazzles and disturbs in equal measure. Often dismissed as low culture, vulgar, or kitsch, the performance embraces the consumption of popular culture and the subconscious value beneath its glossy surface.
Far from a guilty pleasure, Trashed My Title grants a rarer gift: Permission. Permission to find joy in internal desire beyond rigid notions of “good” taste. Here, shame transforms into celebration as bodies move unapologetically in defiance of judgment. Amidst the communal glow of sequins and shine lies a soft yet subversive revolt—a glamorous reclaiming of pleasure.

Performers
Avantika Tibrewal and Zebulan Marvin

See you there 🍾

Thanks to @vogsy_global for trusting in art 🙏🏽

Halloween at COKO Space:
We invite you to enter a Kafkaesque night:
On Thursday 29 October, COKO becomes the territory of Trevoga Collective, an Amsterdam-based choreography label and community of artists who resist convention: dreamers, doomers, and affect aliens drawn towards intensity.

Trevoga, which means anxiety in Bulgarian, creates experimental works that explore the emotional and cultural tensions of our time, moving between choreography, performance, music, fashion, and DIY culture.

We look forward to seeing you.

COKO Happenings

by Trevoga x Softrot
Thursday 29.10.26 8 pm
COKO Space, Prinsengracht 526 H
* wheelchair accessible

0000-00-00 doesn’t fear the end of the world, but a world that never quite ends.

Through heavily processed vocals, comfort clothes, soft hexes, and disorienting dramaturgy, 0000-00-00 captures Softrot mid-molt.

Like an insect whose new exoskeleton hasn’t hardened, her world is unstable, suspended between incomplete images, worst-case scenarios and everyday rituals stuck on repeat. Her softness means she can only move wrongly.

Inflected by Trevoga’s fascination with grim aesthetics and algorithmic alienation, the work turns this suspended state into a condition rather than an exception. What happens when the act of becoming hardens into logistical obligation, when transformation ceases to promise renewal and becomes continuous labor instead?

COKO SPACE TURNS ONE!

Since opening one year ago, COKO Space has been growing into what we truly hoped it could become: a place to meet, gather and celebrate the art of performance, giving it the space, attention and visibility it deserves.

Through our COKO Happenings, artists and audiences come together, new work takes shape, and performance art is not something on the margins, but at the centre of the conversation.

To mark COKO’s first anniversary, we’ve curated BUST, a tribute to the femme chest as a site of memory, power and resistance.

So come celebrate with us and raise a glass to the next chapter of COKO:

What stories does a chest?
BUST investigates the femme chest as a contested body zone, shaped by history, intimacy, and power. Drawing on punk’s disruptive energy, the work opens a personal, political, and sensorial archive. Two performers move through space, shifting landscapes as explorers in an archaeological site, revealing wild and poetic terrains. Breath, lungs and heart become their compass for navigating and unfold these layered stories.

BUST is a multidisciplinary performance by Anna Riley-Shepard and Maria Pisiou, created in collaboration with punk duo Persobag and visual artist and ceramicist Natalia Manta. The work brings together dance, music and wearable installation, combining practices of bodily archive, raw punk sound, ceramic and metal work.. Together, these elements create a visceral landscape where the chest becomes both intimate territory and a site of political and embodied resistance.

Duration
1 hour
Doors open at 8:00 PM
Performance starts at 8:30 PM
*Language no Problem
*This performance contains loud sound and may be distressing for some audience members.

In this multidisciplinary performance, weaving together song, live looping, movement, and text, Ahmad Mallah and Rebecca Lillich // Krüger invite audiences to witness a eulogy for the future.

Drawing on the Arabic children’s bedtime song Yalla Tnam, immortalised by the iconic Lebanese singer Fairuz, and blending it with grief rituals from the Syrian Revolution, the work unfolds as a moving meditation on care, loss, and remembrance.

Through it, the artists explore their converging and conflicting relationships to heritage, belonging, and displacement, reflecting on the distinct trajectories of their migration experiences and their shared present in the Netherlands.

Shared Bio
Ahmad Mallah & Rebecca Lillich // Krüger are an Amsterdam-based performance duo intersecting the personal and political, performing open symbols to generate reflection, introspection and connection.
Their debut works The Ladder (2023) and The Price of Bricks (2024) utilize singular objects through multiple mediums as action-based performance art happenings.
Their new works, pulling blood from stone (2025) and Yalla Tnam (2026), dive into surrealism and heteronormativity through song, gesture and costume as an evolution of their process.
The duo has performed at Oerol Festival (Terschelling NL), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam NL),
Sismógraf Festival (Olot ES), and Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam NL), among others, and
recently presented their first full-length exhibition following a residency at Nieuwe Vide (Haarlem NL).

There is something sacred in the artist’s gift: the power to build a universe from nothing but thought.
In Surfacing HypoKrisia, Laban Trier opened the gates to his surreal playground, inviting our inner children to slip off their shoes and run wild beside him.

Steamy, creepy, funny, frustrating, useless and direct from Berlin:

Losing/Steam
by (love(rocks))
An experimental dance work exploring power, intimacy and resistance

21 May 2026 8pm
@coko.space
Prinsengracht 526
Amsterdam
Tickets: link in bio

About:
Rooted in both history and speculative imagination, Losing/Steam draws attention to how sex workers have long existed within the private spheres of powerful men, spaces where political, economic, and colonial decisions are shaped.

The performance asks: what forms of agency emerge in these intimate encounters, and what might it mean to take that agency seriously?

Through a series of evocative scenes, the performers inhabit surreal and subversive characters: sex workers tending to the historical figure of James Watt, slowly poisoning him through steam baths and delicate acts of care.

Domestic gestures, steaming shirts, preparing medicinal vapors, transform into quiet acts of resistance.

Steam becomes both material and metaphor: a symbol of industrial capitalism’s origins and a force that defies containment, slipping across borders and reshaping environments.

The performance shifts between different moods: steamy, creepy, sometimes funny, and sometimes frustrating or seemingly useless. Movement ranges from controlled, ballet-like precision to moments of disorientation and intoxication.

At once poetic and confrontational, the performance invites audiences into a space where power is reimagined, where the seemingly invisible becomes potent, and where resistance may take unexpected, intimate forms.

Our next COKO Happening invites you into a space where absence becomes presence, and what was denied begins to take shape:

Surfacing HypoKrisia
By Charlie Laban Trier
30 Apr 2026 20:00

Surfacing HypoKrisia unfolds as a series of performative acts that attempt to summon a speculative, myth-like figure: HypoKrisia. Imagined by Trier as the forgotten younger sister of Tiresias, the oracle from Greek mythology, HypoKrisia emerges as both fiction and force, a presence that reshapes how resilience and identity are understood.

According to the classical myth, Tiresias sees two snakes twisting together while mating. Disturbed by what he does not understand, he strikes the female snake and is transformed by Hera into a woman.
In Trier’s reimagining, both Tiresias and HypoKrisia can be read as trans figures.
But HypoKrisia does not move toward a final form.
She stays in-between.
She chooses to exist in a state of being unfinished, always not becoming.
HypoKrisia is cast as dangerous, ungraspable, and ultimately erased. Like the snake, she is fluid and elusive, shedding skins, slipping through narrative control. The performance acts as an invocation, a gesture of calling her back from beneath the surface where she has long been suppressed.

Fragments from our last COKO Happening, 26 March:
An evening where the body became an archive, of memory, perception, and subtle defiance. Face and Fingers unfolded through 108 gestures, with face and hands stepping into the spotlight as quiet yet eloquent protagonists.

With powerful performances by Moe Satt and Liah Frank, the night moved between choreography, conversation, film and Lahpet Thoke (tea leaf salad) tasting.

Special thanks to Willem Velthoven for moderating the post-performance talk.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at COKO Space.

Sharing a taste of the lyrics from Forceful Catering, the musical performance by Kexin Hao at the final COKO Happening of 2025 🍽️🎶

There’s more coming in 2026. Stay tuned.

Thank you for the many submissions to our open call. Due to the high number of projects received, it won’t be possible to respond to everyone individually. The quality of the projects surpassed even their number, and selecting only 8 for next year will be a real challenge. We’ll be contacting the selected applicants soon.
And if you missed the happening, make sure to check out the beautiful photos by Thomas Lenden on our website: coko.amsterdam 📸✨

Lyrics
I am serving, you deserve
take a seat, it’s reserved
okay babe, it’s gonna hurt
but I am in the mood so don’t disturb

there’s no foreplay, no rehearse
no appetiser no dessert
it’s so wet and you will slurp
you will eat it you will burp

hold my fist and grab my wrist
take the hit and feel the grip I
lift the stick, drop the whip oh
it’s so big but I won’t quit

hit or miss or trip or skip
can’t predict, can’t resist
fist and wrist and lips and hips
take a sip, lick my drip

it’s so painful it’s so sweet
it’s a trap and it’s a treat
it’s the chill and it’s the heat
who’s gonna beat, who’s gonna bleed

it’s so painful it’s so sweet
it’s a trap and it’s a treat
it’s the chill and it’s the heat
I can’t breath, I can’t breath

who’s paying whose work
who’s doing house chords
who’s on couch watching sports
who’s cooking second course

I am aching I am sore
I will scream and I will roar
give me punch and give me more
I’m a wife, I’m a whore, I am tired, I am torn

daily routine, the mundane
who is to be entertained
who’s playing whose game
who attacks and who refrains

give me love and give me pain
give me impulse in my vein
unclog the pipe and plumb the drain
it’s gonna rain, it’s gonna rain
