Well, we may not have placed on the Best Lit Mags for @chillsubs_official, BUT it’s still a win on how many lovely categories people voted for us! Thank YOU for voting for FLARE and telling us what you think of our literary magazine! 2026 will be great with our first free-to-enter but paid winners contest, more main issues/special themed issues, nominating great writers for awards, etc.! As EIC, I never expected for FLARE to take off like it did this year, and I’m so incredibly thankful that others also believe this is needed in the literary world! 💜💜

We hope as we grow as a #litmag, maybe someday we’ll be there on that list, but to us, it’s not about getting an award. It’s about bringing disabled, chronically ill, and mental health-related voices up and fostering a community that creates empathy and education to others in order to create a more accepting and understanding world!

Also, the biggest congrats to @asickmagazine who was featured on the Actually Inclusive list! They do something similar as what we do! Go check them out!!

A piece of my fiction (an excerpt from an unpublished novel) has been published in @flarelitmag! And wow — selected from more than 300 submissions! I’m honored.

Thank you Kelly at FLARE for all your work and including my writing.

This piece is loosely based on my real-life experience, when I went to San Francisco for a conference and ended up spending the whole time in the hospital. My character, Kaitlyn, also has chronic migraine and is working for a tech company in the middle of a private equity takeover.

Please check out my piece and others at @flarelitmag

I'm so happy to share my review of Kimberly Casey's stunning second collection, Other Side of Broken, out with Riot in Your Throat Press - thank you so much to editor-in-chief of FLARE Magazine, Kelly Esparza, for publishing this review in the magazine's Substack newsletter - and for her leadership and vision in curating FLARE Magazine. FLARE is a fantastic new literary journal dedicated to "those who deal with mental health, chronic illnesses, and disabilities, whether that means they’re writers, readers, and/or artists and is geared for the disabled as well as friends and family of the chronically ill and disabled people they know" (FLARE website). Kimberly writes elegantly, eloquently, and truthfully about the chronic pain of endometriosis, mental health, and addiction, and their impact on the self and relationships--with tender attention and devotion to the natural and animal world. This book is a must-read! Thank you to Kimberly for writing it, and to Courtney LeBlanc, editor of Riot in Your Throat, for launching Kimberly's necessary, beautiful, and gorgeously crafted work into the world!!

Thought I’d share some of my poetry. This a poem for @flarelitmag I wrote on my winter #lupus flare during that annoying cold snap with the cold chill that seeped into my bones.
