I’m the featured author today for @flarelitmag! Just a reminder this is Invisible Disabilities week. Many people struggle with chronic illness, chronic pain or all kinds of things you may never see or know about. I fought for years to get a diagnosis and now that I have one I still fight everyday to get doctors and healthcare professionals to listen to me and take me seriously. Be kind to those around you, you never know what they are fighting or dealing with. Issue 6 of Flare Magazine @flarelitmag is out now! 🔥 Editor-in-Chief @kelwritesbooks2 has created a home for artwork and written works by artists living with chronic illness and/or mental health conditions. Thank you Kelly for selecting my piece “Panic in Color” to be included in this issue released for Invisible Disabilities Week ✨📝🎨

This piece was inspired by the artist’s own struggle with ongoing panic attacks. The melting-like nature of the watercolors represents some of the most debilitating symptoms—a rush of white hot heat, the sensation of the brain short-circuiting, and the inability to think straight.

Erin McCluskey (she/her) is a writer and photographer in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her visual art has been featured in The RavensPerch, Fusion Art, and Spotlight Contemporary Art Magazine. Erin finds that the arts help her cope with symptoms of anxiety, depression, and depersonalization-derealization disorder.

Happy Invisible Disabilities Week! ❤️‍🔥

I'm so excited that my poem Patient Chart has found a home at @flarelitmag during such a meaningful week.

I was trying to screenshot my poem yesterday & accidentally snapped a selfie of my face seeing the publication announcement. I really appreciate my friends, family, and writer pals being so nice and encouraging. I'd forgotten how happy writing makes me.☀

Find the whole poem & Issue 6 at the link in my bio, but here's a brief excerpt:

// sweat-soaked sheets linger in fever / sore belly swells giving birth / to a piecemeal version of me / expecting a dilemma in the mailbox / sits unopened like a sterile sewing kit / rushing to refrigerate / condensation and mad science drip / making sure the vials aren’t smashed / every two weeks / delivery drivers raise a little Lazarus in me / rotating injection sites / my poor belly and thighs / count to twenty, honey / pulling out the Humira pen / I wonder if I’ll have cancer from all the sewing / with a black box warning / still a grateful pincushion / no insurance, no resurrections //

The poem explores what it's like to navigate overlapping chronic health conditions (including physical & mental) in four parts.

I'm shy in a lot of ways, but I'm realizing speaking openly about our experiences can help others feel less alone.

I'm so grateful to FLARE Magazine.

A piece of my fiction (an excerpt from an unpublished novel) has been published in @flarelitmag! And wow — selected from more than 300 submissions! I’m honored.

Thank you Kelly at FLARE for all your work and including my writing.

This piece is loosely based on my real-life experience, when I went to San Francisco for a conference and ended up spending the whole time in the hospital. My character, Kaitlyn, also has chronic migraine and is working for a tech company in the middle of a private equity takeover.

When I’m not using my mobility aids, people often assume I’m fine, non-disabled and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my experience as a young person living with chronic pain.
