Mangrove Culinary Archives Vol. 01: Coconut

From Coconut Wata to Table.

Some of our greatest culinary treasures aren’t found in cookbooks. They’re carried through generations, preserved through lived experiences, shared traditions and the people within our communities.

For our inaugural volume, we gathered around one familiar ingredient, the coconut, to explore its versatility, cultural significance and the stories connected to it.

At the center of our evening was Roderick, a longtime coconut legacy vendor at Flatbush & Caton, whose knowledge and experiences guided us through an evening of conversation, culinary exploration and a shared meal.

Curated and led by @sirpreme The Artist Formerly Known as Chef (Chef Love) of @mi_za_plaz

the evening brought together thoughtful culinary expressions and something far greater than the food itself.

The preservation of our stories, our traditions and the people who carry them.

Because food is more than sustenance. It’s history, identity, memory and connection.

This is the Mangrove Culinary Archives. A living collection of the culinary knowledge and foodways that make our communities who we are.

One ingredient. Countless stories. A living archive.

Vol. 01 is just the beginning.

There is something special about spending time with the people who make our community feel like home.

Our local entrepreneurs and small business owners do so much more than run businesses. They preserve our culture, create opportunities, bring our neighbors together, and help keep the spirit of our community alive.

In moments like these, supporting them matters. Every purchase, every visit, every recommendation is an investment in our neighbors and in the community we are building together.

During Labor Day weekend I visited @flatbush_central and I am proud to stand with our small businesses, celebrate our Caribbean community, and always show love to the people who pour so much into our neighborhoods. by @flatbush_central

My 2nd Ever Back To School Drive is official in the books!!! With an outstanding turnout of 60+ families and 100 backpacks šŸŽ’ successfully distributedā€¼ļø This event went exactly how me and the Execusign planned and curated. A positive youth-led community initiative that brought together not only families, but friends, and local community staplesšŸ™šŸ½. I’ll like to give a big thanks to @flatbush_central market for allowing us the space to put together this event. An also a big thanks to vendors, sponsors, and volunteers. That not only participated within the event but genuinely helped us uplift the youth within the Flatbush community and prepare them for the upcoming school. I can’t wait to keep this event as a reoccurring event on the Flatbush community’s calendar, making this an event family in need can count on. Thanks again, see you soon.

NYC Food Entrepreneurs — this one’s for you!
Beginning September 8th, we’re collaborating with Cornell University to offer Article 20-C Food Processing Certification classes right here at the market.
So what does 20-C mean? It’s an important step for food entrepreneurs looking to legally manufacture, process, package, and sell certain food products for retail in New York State — think sauces, seasonings, baked goods, packaged foods, and more.
If you’ve been thinking about taking that recipe out of your kitchen and turning it into a real retail-ready product, this is for you.
Classes begin September 8th. Let’s get certified and get those products on shelves.

Some people don’t just cook—they answer a calling.

While visiting the Flatbush Caribbean Market in Brooklyn, we had the pleasure of meeting Isra Gordon of @MintPorchMeals.

As a Metabolic & Holistic Health Coach, Chef, and Functional Health Practitioner, Isra believes that the ingredients matter—and being in mint condition matters too. Through years of study, research, and a genuine passion for helping others, she’s created an alkaline, plant-based menu designed to nourish from the inside out. šŸ”¬šŸŒæ

We sampled some of her delicious drinks and, before long, found ourselves talking about digestive health, daily habits, and how often we push through discomfort instead of listening to what our bodies are telling us.

It was a reminder that Food is Therapy. Every meal is an opportunity to care for ourselves, fuel our bodies, and be more intentional about our health.

Thank you, Isra, for sharing your knowledge, your heart, and your passion for wellness. We can’t wait to share more stories from this incredible community of entrepreneurs.

šŸ’¬ What does ā€œFood is Therapyā€ mean to you?
Or tell us: What’s one food that always makes your body feel good? We’d love to hear your story.

Flavor brings people together. ✨

Sometimes one bite starts a whole conversation - about memories, culture, creativity, and the stories behind the food we love.

While filming inside The Mangrove at Flatbush Central Caribbean Market, Chef Keesha O’Galdez of Live Loud Foods shared her bold flavored pistachios with us.

Eric from iLovett Films captured the official taste test šŸŽ„ā€¦ and let’s just say those orange candied pistachios didn’t stand a chance. Empty bag. No crumbs. No nuts left. šŸ˜‚

That’s the power of food - it creates connection.

What’s a flavor or seasoning that instantly takes you back to a memory?

Today reminded us that healing isn’t always about finding a quick fix.

We had the opportunity to experience Qigong, a practice centered on breath, movement, and awareness. It was a beautiful reminder that taking care of ourselves means slowing down long enough to listen. Sometimes the emotions we carry don’t begin today, they come from somewhere deeper. Practice gives us the opportunity to notice, reflect, and better understand ourselves.

As humans, we experience a wide range of emotions that often go unspoken. Creating space to move, breathe, cook, connect, and be in community can be the beginning of something meaningful.

Community may not solve everything, but it reminds us that we don’t have to grow alone.

While visiting Flatbush Central Caribbean Market (@flatbush_central), we also had the pleasure of meeting Nadia Ketoure. As a health coach, she creates intentional, zero-waste vegan food designed to nourish both body and mind. Her passion for mindful eating and wellness is inspiring, and we’re excited to learn more from her journey.

Give Nadia and her ā€œMarket Lifeā€ insight a follow and support the incredible work she’s doing towards food, health and healing ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹.

We’re always curious to learn something new. How about you?
