(WARNING! long ramble ahead, read or dont read at your own discretion)ahead of the gig this saturday i wanted to get some semi cohesive thoughts out about presence, specifically on the dancefloor, excuse the essay..its a privilege to have a whole night to myself to explore and dig deep into whats become an obsession of a record collection over the past couple of years and im really excited. ive been doing a lot of prep, listening to heaps of music and thinking of many possibilities but haven’t set much in stone. on the night im gonna be super focused on the music and tryna stay present and i want you to do the same! i encourage everyone to really listen and sit in every moment, even the ones of tension and uncertainty, see what happens. music and dance go hand in hand, these are the two cornerstones of this beautiful scene, not talk-someones-ear-off and dance, not music and seed-on-a-stranger. i dont wanna sound preachy but i’m real passionate about this so fuck it. in my opinion one of the best experiences in life you can have is properly dancing, being fully in your body and absorbed in the music, that comes with being present and comfortable enough to lose yourself. so i please encourage you to be mindful of how much space you take up on the dancefloor physically and vocally, go outside for big convos and spread out if people are getting squished (imo one of the best spots in b.space is at the back by the second set of speakers, theres nothing special happening at the front, just me turning knobs).like at porkmate, we are gonna sticker phone cameras. this is not a weird ego thing where i think everyone wants to record me djing, its to act as a reminder to yourself that this night exists only for us for a few hours. its to encourage everyone to loosen up and feel safe to dance freely and express themselves, letting your body move the way it wants to move, even if thats just a two-step. clubs are for dancing, your not out of place if you dance, you are if you dont! plus, its the best compliment you can pay a dj ;)) thats enough from me, dont forget ya hearing protection, the systems gonna be pumpin! see yall saturday x by @flatmate__

Flatmate is a DJ, producer, label head and party organiser from Te Whanganui-a-Tara. No doubt many of you have seen him heating up the chillery for the Froth takeover at Twisted Frequency the last couple of years. Beyond that, he’s a cornerstone of the scene in the Capital — organising legendary bunker raves, all-night sessions at B.Space, and releasing excellent electronic music on his label, Dance Therapy.If there’s one saying that Flatmate lives by, it is ‘the grass grows where you water it’. As those around him have been migrating overseas, something has kept him from following. An unshakable feeling which suggests that all people are seeking elsewhere can be found here at home. It’s this belief that has made him approach the scene with more care and intention to nourish what originally inspired him. Those that went to our last warehouse party know the magic of this space. We are stepping up the experience with the help of our friends at Fantasia.AV, they will be providing live visual projections and a new lighting concept. We anticipate tickets will sell out quick for this. If we sell out online, there will not be door sales.
