After a terrifying scare, Mom opened her eyes at 5 a.m. and was able to tell us her name. She has been diagnosed with pneumonia and metabolic encephalopathy, she is currently in stable condition. I feel like we are on a rollercoaster.

Grief is hard to explain when the person you love is still here. It can feel like you’re constantly saying goodbye in little ways—watching pieces of the person you knew change, while still loving them more deeply every day.

There’s no finish line and no clear way through it. You just keep moving forward, holding onto the moments you still have and being grateful for every bit of the person you love that is still there.
