Got to visit the release of @norsemap in St. Peters in the city centre on Saturday night, not only was it beautiful to see so many people interested in the history and creation of our lands but to hear Einar tell stories, poems and songs from his culture and country was incredible. He had a powerful voice that echoed throughout the hall, I really wished it was a full concert. #vikings #corkcity #iviking #ucc #northmainstreet taken in St. Peter's Cork by @flavoursoffiction

(Minor spoilers)

📖 The Knight & The Moth by Rachel Gillig
⭐️

This was such a disappointment. I’m not a huge lover of romantasy, I love fantasy & I enjoy romcoms but I just find that with the boom in romantasy books, a lot of them are just copy & paste & trying to profit off the trend. No hate to anyone if romantasy is your thing, it’s just not for me!
🦋
After reading Gillig’s The Shepherd King series, I thought I was safe with this author. Her previous books had romance but it wasn’t the whole story, it was more well rounded. Unfortunately TKATM was totally different.
🗡️
The concept was really interesting & it got more interesting after they met the final Omen but I had already figured out most of the mysteries so there were no real big surprised. I also felt like most of the loose ends or questions were resolved or revealed at the end & the “cliffhanger”…wasn’t? I was already sick of the characters & the story by the end & sometimes the end can redeem the book but not this time.
🦋
Also if enemies to lovers is your thing, this is barely that. I think you’ll be disappointed. Like does it count as enemies to lovers if they’re gagging for each other the second they meet? They’re constantly staring at each other & sniping at each other in a way that’s meant to be flirty & clever but honestly, I thought I was going to strain my eyeballs from rolling them so much. Like even though Sybil is telling everyone who will listen (including herself) how much she hates Rodrick Myndacious (don’t get me started on that god awful name) & yet after a week of knowing him, she says she knows every line of his back well enough to know exactly how he’s feeling?? After a WEEK?! Girl please.
🗡️
One of my biggest gripes with romantasy as a whole, is the repetition of the same words/phrases. Sex scenes are super cringey & described as people “unravelling” or “fracturing”, the men are always growling or the lines of their shoulders are always going taut. This is what I mean with copy & paste. Her first two books were so well written & so original. This honestly feels like someone else wrote it.

Is this a review I see before me?! 😱 I’m so flippin behind 🫣

Butter - Asako Yuzuki
⭐️⭐️⭐️

I remember when this came out, a lot of people were saying it was way too long & slow & at first I was like really?? Because I was really enjoying it at first but then…yeah it’s too long & slow & nothing really happens?
I loved the writing & her descriptions of food & texture & taste were phenomenal! They reminded me of the descriptions of scent in Patrick Suskind’s Perfume (one of my favourites) but I think the book would have worked so much better & had more impact as a shorter book. There were so many side characters that would pop up every now & again & I’d spend ages trying to remember who they were. The protagonist also kept having the same revelations about her own life & society over & over again. It was just really repetitive by the end. I’d probably give it a 2.5 but bumped it up because of the beautiful descriptions.

I feel like I’m the last person in the country to get on the @doireann.ni.ghriofa bandwagon 🫣 better late than never!

I’ve only heard wonderful things about A Ghost in the Throat & it had been on my list for ages, I just hadn’t gotten around to reading it yet. Then I heard she was releasing a book based on the history of St. Kevin’s Asylum here in Cork & I knew I just had to read it.

I’ve lived in Cork my whole life & St. Kevin’s & also Our Lady’s Hospital next door have always fascinated me. The two imposing structures stand watch over the river & the Lee Fields & have always set my imagination alight. A huge portion of Irish history is horrific & traumatic & these buildings & what happened in them are no different but the people who worked or were imprisoned in there have always been sidelined & silenced. Until now.

I was lucky enough to go to Doireann’s launch in @waterstones.cork on Thursday & she spoke about how she delved into the city archives to find out all she could about the hospital & the people involved. I imagine you could spend years getting lost in the archives!

I’m so excited to get stuck into Said The Dead but first, I’m finally reading A Ghost in the Throat.

I do love a bit of weird girl lit 👁️

📖 The Eyes Are The Best Part - Monika Kim
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this. It’s a fantastically haunting story about the fetishisation of Asian women, race, gender roles & the pressures of eldest daughters & their duties to support their families. Body horror is also a great way to explore female rage & feelings of powerlessness & taking back power.

Be warned that this book isn’t for the squeamish! Monika Kim’s descriptions really…pop 👀 (pun intended)

I can’t wait to read her next book & I’m also looking for more weird girl lit recommendations so send them my way please!

📖book review📖

(Minor spoilers)

Strange Sally Diamond - Liz Nugent
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this book right up until the final few chapters. It was like a cross between Room & Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, both of which I loved. But it just felt as if the author didn’t really know how to end it. Sally just seemed to completely regress & her ending felt so hopeless.

I did love how it showed what life might be like for someone who has gone through something so violently traumatic at a young age. When I read Room years ago, it was so interesting & upsetting of course, to see how the child lived & survived then so I was excited to read about a character living with the consequences of being born into that. For the most part it was good, I loved Sally but I just think the end was a let down.

🎈book review🎈

IT - Stephen King
⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was not my first Stephen King book, so I knew what I was getting into in terms of style etc. I’ll also say that while I haven’t read everything by him, from my experience I prefer his short stories or his shorter novels. He loves to meander.

I actually didn’t know much about IT before going in, I’ve never watched any of the adaptations. So I don’t actually know what IT was, nor did I realise that he wasn’t in it all that much which was a little disappointing. I get that most of the true horror of the novel are through the humans characters, the abuse, bullying, racism that The Loser Club experience, even though it is through IT’s influence.

I enjoyed the parts explaining how IT had been there long before Derry. But I do feel that the novel was so bloated with unnecessary details which at times felt so repetitive. I don’t mind a long book, I read The Witching Hour by Anne Rice a couple of months ago which is just as long but flowed much better. I just felt like huge chunks of the book could have been removed & the story wouldn’t have suffered. I’m quite happy to DNF a book when I’m not enjoying it but when I was about 700 pages through I felt I might as well keep going, it might pay off in the end. Honestly I just felt relieved when it was over that I could move on.

✨book review✨

Rosemary’s Baby - Ira Levin
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

I’m so far behind on my reviews, I’ll probably get to my Christmas books by March 🥴

I really enjoyed this one. I’ve never seen the movie so I didn’t know what to expect. It was so claustrophobic & I just had this deep feeling of dread the further I progressed in the story. In terms of atmosphere it was quite similar to Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier (a favourite of mine).

What really surprised me was the portrayal of Rosemary’s experiences with medical professionals & how they dismissed any concerns she was having. I think lots of women (whether or not they’ve experienced pregnancy/childbirth) would be able to relate to not being taken seriously. It just wasn’t a take I was expecting from such an old book considering women’s medical experiences are only something that people are really beginning to talk about.

Anyway, I’d highly recommend this book. It’s quite scary but not always in the way you’d expect 👀

Strange Houses by Uketsu
⭐️⭐️✨

Hi everyone 🤓 I know it’s almost Christmas but I’m holding off on my festive reads until next month. Still time for spooky books!
🏡
I really enjoyed Strange Pictures when I read it & I was looking forward to whatever came next which is Strange Houses. It was weird & I enjoyed it for the most part but it was a bit more convoluted than the last one & I kept getting some of the characters mixed up because some their names were very similar & the characters weren’t very well defined.
