I know everyone would rather see my kids dressed up in their homemade Bert and Ernie (sans wigs), but instead here’s just me in my twin-toddler-wrangling-friendly “Halloween Ms Rachel” costume. I’m sure many people just thought I was looking extra festive, but my kids understood and LOVED seeing mommy dressed as “Aunt Rachel.” by @flaxbart

I didn’t know much about workers’ rights pioneer Dolores Huerta before hearing her speak (in conjunction with a screening of a documentary of her life, DOLORES) 9 years ago. Watching the film and hearing this still very vibrant woman encourage us to keep fighting, I wondered what rock I had been living under. Her voice and her spirit were both penetrating and inspiring. All these years later, I am now a worker owner at a media cooperative not far from where I heard her speak.

Endless thanks to Dolores Huerta for the work she did throughout her long life to help this country deliver on its illusive foundational promise.

(And thanks too to my @lkschubert for inviting me to come along on an adventure downtown!) by @flaxbart

On today’s episode, we dig into DIGGER, grouse (more) about The Merger, and do a new kind of movie quiz, this time about movies set in their nearish future. Fun fun fun! by @flaxbart

Two years ago today, I went on the world’s shortest ambulance ride — across the street from my non-stress test appointment to the L&D. Nothing about that day was much like I’d imagined, except for the part where, after both my twins were safely delivered, the pain and panic turned off as if by a switch. Part of me had not believed that, after everything leading up to that moment, I could really be so lucky.

People keep saying “how can they already be 2??” And yes, time flies, but to me these two years have been my entire life. Happy birthday to Gloria and Graham, bright lights in a world that needs every lumen it can get. by @flaxbart

Happy 77th Birthday to my mom, who I’ve taught the kids to call “Oma,” after trying out a few different things I thought she might have liked better. You are all around us. by @flaxbart

I don’t know what part of my sermon this was, but I love this shot from @colleendodsonbaker of me looking the way I felt after an insane week. A week of work challenges, health challenges, sleep challenges. A week that ended in me delivering a freshly written and rather complicated sermon at @allsaintsbh (tying together the Old Testament story of Joseph revealing his identity to his brothers, the New Testament story of Jesus being a little salty to a Canaanite woman, until her persistence changes his tune, via the fabulous and moving show I saw at the Pasadena Playhouse a couple weeks back, MEXODUS).

It was my fourth time preaching at All Saints’ and the first in about a year; each time I have to take a step back and marvel at what an incredible and totally unexpected honor it is. This one was a heavy lift for me in this season of my life. All of my minutes feel spoken for right now. But I am so glad I said yes to this, glad I said yes to the invite to see Mexodus, glad the dots connected in my head, and grateful to the people who cared for my children long enough to make seeing the show and giving the sermon possible. by @flaxbart

Let them know where you stand re: physical media with a hat, shirt, or tote from MaxFilm’s merch store! It’s at maxfunstore dot com, and the link is in our bio! by @flaxbart

This week, MaxFun Member Molly compelled us to watch PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, which raised an important topic of historical cultural understanding: “Who/what is a Paul Williams?” And of course, @alonso.duralde had ALL the answers! by @flaxbart

We can all thank listener (and MaxFun Member!) Molly for this year’s listener selection episode: from 1974 it’s PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE! Producer Marissa joined the gang for this one — a cult classic that was a first-time watch for half of us.

Also, we talked about our favorite films of the year so far! How many of them will still be on the list come December 31? That’s almost as great a mystery as the one at the heart of THE PARADISE... by @flaxbart

There have been many reasons given as to why a guest chose a particular movie to discuss. But this is the first time DONAHUE has been cited! Listen or watch to @boomboomhiller tell Jordan all about his memories of STEEL MAGNOLIAS (and more!) on this week’s episode! by @flaxbart

We got a super (sorry, but it’s true) guest for our SUPERGIRL episode! Our friend film critic @theamynicholson joins us to talk about the film, as well as some weird movie news and our favorite superhero movie performances (regardless of our feelings about the overall film). by @flaxbart

Sure sure, the country is a quarter of a millennium old. But today these two turned one and three
quarters! Cue the fireworks (which they’ll be asleep for, godwilling.) by @flaxbart
