Two small watercolors from Belmont
About 11 × 14 inches

On view at Belmont City Hall, Homer Building, starting today (Oct 10th 26 to Jan 27).

Belmont is full of trees and flower gardens. I am always sad when an old tree is cut and not replaced, and glad when a young one is planted.

Path around the pond
35 × 35 inches

An experiment on linen I wove myself, painted with vegetal casein and natural pigments. The blue is ultramarine.
I am giving the landscape a body: the circular path around the pond, the trees turning with it, the large flowers throwing color through the whole field.

Early winter

A large watercolor of the tall blooms around the pond, after frost and rain have broken them. A piece from 2024: I am taking the series back up at this scale.

They still hold their seeds. Birds and bees keep coming for what is left, and so do the mice and the squirrels. In March the great horned owl is there. From time to time, a coyote or a deer.

Walking there, the vegetation wraps you. I wanted that cover to be present in the room: high enough to stand beside, not only to look at.

Spring and Fall in new England’s natural reservation: two watercolors, about 35x45 inches.

A group of watercolors are on loan through the Corporate Loan Program at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum.

Companies around Boston borrow work from New England artists, and live with it for a while.

The program has run since 1973.

Pond, on handwoven linen
35 × 35 inches.

An experiment on a linen canvas I wove myself, painted with a vegetal medium, without acrylic.

Walking, running or swimming in New England’s ponds impresses shapes and colors on me. I wanted the abstraction to stay attached to that place.

Watercolor occupies a singular place in contemporary practice: immediate, luminous, and inherently responsive to the artist’s hand. Its transparency invites a different kind of thinking: one rooted in restraint, atmosphere, gesture, and the dialogue between control and chance. A wash cannot always be reclaimed. An edge can carry as much meaning as a line.

Ghost Forest and Pond

« Ghost Forest » is about the inheritance of a landscape, and the hope about life coming from it, 35x55 inches.

« Pond » is the place between earth and heaven. A folded surface, like a chrysalis. Its surface give back the light and show an infinity we can almost grasp, 22x30 inches.

The other pages are studies from a nature reserve close to home. Nature studies are what push the work toward an abstraction that still has to remain real.

Golden Ratio Studies

A large part of the work is experiment: pages smaller than the usual paintings, where I test structure on the flat plane.

These compositions look for an order already present in landscape, without traditional perspective. They can read as if seen from above, in different weathers, or from different places.

This research in composition has continued for several years. It still informs the more open watercolors.

The pond between

A weaving begun from evenings at Walden. The repeating waves gave their freedom to the weave. In the dark water reflecting the sky, I found my space for breath.

The same suspended space floats under my hands when I am at the loom, between heaven and earth.
