I’ve built new fly racks for our band Defecto.

So glad everything just worked flawlessly at their premieres at our recent performances on national morning TV (@gotv2dk - Go’ Morgen Danmark on TV2) and when we opened the Hades stage at Copenhell 🔥

Our old setup was a bit dated and took up too much space - we wanted something way more lightweight, and more importantly; fly friendly.

No off-the-shelf solutions met our requirements, so the only way forward was to design and build it myself. With my technical background this was a really nice challenge!

The system consists of two separate lightweight rack frames from the norwegian company @flightcasebyskarding - each of them fits in its own rugged Peli case. We keep the unit weights under 32 kg - perfectly fit for checking them in at any airport.

The first rack contains a Behringer X32 Rack mixer used for our individual In-Ear Monitoring (IEM) mixes, power line filter, DI line drivers, microphone splitting units, Wi-Fi router, Roland trigger module for my kick drums and even a Raspberry Pi with @qlcplus to DMX control our smoke machines and LED bars in the future.

The other rack houses the Sennheiser wireless IEM transmitters and antennas and a drawer for our beltpacks and accessories.

We play a lot of shows where really fast changeovers are crucial, so the two racks are easily interconnected using a multicore cable and every connector is marked up precisely to avoid any confusion in the sometimes stressful changeovers.

Space is very limited inside the racks, because besides the equipment itself cables also take up much space. For that reason every signal cable is cut off in exact lenghts. I soldered or crimped every pin - this took ages, with a total of 234 solder points for XLR/TRS and 120 pin crimps for the multicore cables 😅 Luckily the initial plan succeeded 🥳

I can’t wait to bring it along for many more fun shows with my @defecto_official mates 🤘🥳🥁🔥
