I have shared this story a few times to mark this day. hard to believe it’s been 25 years ago when every detail is still so vividly and visually seared in my brain.

ask any new yorker ‘where were you on 9/11?’ and let the tsunami of stories sweep over you, here’s mine:

It was a gorgeous crisp fall day with one of those bluest of blue skies like today; the NYC kind of clear that when the sun reflects off a building you have to quickly shield your eyes.
That morning I was interviewing a candidate for my design team. The day before had been a particularly stressful day - with meetings stacking up and being pushed back, he had kindly agreed to reschedule for breakfast the next day. He showed up at the restaurant with luggage and I felt horrible as I didn’t know he had originally planned to fly home to California that morning but had changed plans to meet me. We had a lovely breakfast, and I offered him the job before we left.
On our way out, the maître d’ stopped us and said “if you’re going to the airport you’re out of luck. A plane has crashed into the World Trade Tower and all flights are grounded - they think we’re under attack.” We looked at each other in shock - I asked if he had a place to stay (he did) and took off running for home a couple blocks away arriving to turn on the news and watch in horror as the South Tower collapsed. My husband and I spent that harrowing morning trying to get through to the east side and gather our kids at their schools as the park’s transverse roads had all been closed to make way for the ambulances that never came from downtown.

It turns out that the young man who delayed his trip was originally booked on Flight 93 out of Newark that crashed into that Pennsylvania field.

new month. new start. happy february! quiet view from my desk.

seeking peace + little glimmers of joy amidst the chaos + rage. grateful for the distraction of work + creative partnerships.

finally made it to the incredibly inspiring @coreydanielsgallery on the eve of their Paper Works show (thank you for the rec @hilaryrobertson it did not disappoint)

the first slide is a fragment of a stunning oil sketch by a new favorite artist @timothypwilson. the stack of charcoal landscapes are his as well.

the undulating ceramic sculpture is @laurenhb who is soon to be featured at @313.spaces this Oct market. a lovely treat to see her work in this special place.

happy tumbleweed tuesday!

Officiallly the unofficial end to the summer on fire island. when the last of the summer people have left and the boardwalks + beaches are returned to the strolling (marauding?) deer and locals.

life is a little quieter and slower. And I have the bay to myself for sunset swims 🏊‍♀️🏊‍♀️🏊‍♀️

Off season is the best season.Warm ocean, cool nights, empty beaches and 20 more days of summer.

today’s word is : hypernormalization

tending to my garden + focusing on my own little Sissinghurst (emphasis on little) and channeling my inner vita sackville-west, these words from @emilyunhinged below resonated with me.

trying to hold it together and find balance (hence my fleeting symmetrical moonflowers as metaphor.)

how are you doing ? what tips do you have ? it feels duplicitous to dive into the garden or work or make dinner while the world falls apart. but nature and a swim in the bay at the end of the day seems to do the trick, for now.

“you’re not crazy. it feels surreal right now to take care of your kids and throw birthday parties and make dinner, while the systems we used to trust fall apart around us. there’s even a name for it - hypernormalization. carrying on as if nothing is happening while everything is happening every day all at once. the important thing to know is that you’re not the only one feeling like this and it means you’re awake and paying attention. we must continue to stay engaged and human - to feel our feelings, to witness the world, and to use our privilege to continue fighting for our kids and all kids. they want us numb so we give up. but we have community, joy, and love. lean into those and keep going.” - @emilyunhinged

I cannot celebrate where we are but I can celebrate the promise of what we can be if we all come together.
